If say we are applying to six schools that use the common app, is it okay to use the same essays for all of them since the common app has the same essay topics? How many times is considered too much when recycling an essay?

yes, thats fine.

you betcha. I wrote the ultimate recycle essay for colleges requiring supplemental apps. Most of it explains my background, and then a paragraph explains why I want to go to that school. It looks exactly like I wrote it particularly for that college considering all the research I did to make sure that my essay supports why I want to go to the school. I could send it to you maybe. Be careful though. If it is not well done and you write it like this
blah blah blah (insert your college here) blah blah blah
it will go over badly in decisions.

If you are just talking about common app answers 1-6, then you're supposed to use the same one.

In fact, UMICH's website on essay writing ENCOURAGES applicants to re-use essay topics. Unless the college asks for something specific, common sense says why waste your time if you already have something great?
