Okay what do i do now

i just got my defer letter.
my first semester grades have some not so hot grades… 73 and like 76 in two of my AP classes… but I still want to go to BC. what can i do?
i took the SATs in december and my scores aren’t out yet. i had a 2000 on my SATs that i sent in but idk how much better i did on the december test.

108 views and nothing?!

Gotta get those grades up, not only for BC, but other college apps as well. How about a tutor? Extra credit?

Make sure all your RD apps get submitted.

Search cc – there are literally hundreds of threads on ‘What to do after a Deferral’.

Good luck.

don’t stop believing!

lol, cacciato…

Dear dontstopbelievin : Some constructive advice to truly help you coming into this weekend. Before we start, I know how you must feel disappointed right now. This is the number one reason why we have been advising students to have their RD applications ready to go BEFORE the early access decisions were rendered. Now that the EA fate is known, this is the time to pick yourself up and get onto the next round of the college process.

Our first piece of advice is to put the Boston College deferral aside and work this weekend on your secondary set of applications. Proactively pull together those packages and checks and have them ready to postal mail early next week. Right now, you need to be operating as if Boston College is off the table.

Second, take a really hard look at your essay now with a critical eye towards stilted language or silly grammar/spelling errors. Do you believe that your essay could have brought down the quality of your overall application? Did you have it reviewed in school by a trusted teacher?

Third, take another look at your board scores compared to the various quartiles of accepted students as called out on collegeboard.com. Be sure that you have a couple of schools where your current grades will fit. The reason we mention this is that your 2000 SAT three-way score is about 120 points below the midpoint range of the accepted EA candidates at Boston College - it is important to know where your score will size up in the regular decision pool at other schools.

Fourth, consider your AP course grades. Your grades are potentially showing that collegiate caliber work might be on the difficult side for you right now or that you have not pressed as hard as you could have in the first semester of your last year of High School. Think about how you are going to increase those grades.

Fifth, put down the pen and think. Really introspect for a few minutes. Was Boston College truly your number one school? Discuss this with your family or trusted teachers. Were you willing to say yes upon acceptance? I noticed that you have been active on the UPenn board for example. Were there doubts in your top selection? Once you and your family reach concensus and only AFTER filing your other applications can we really discuss next steps for BC (a letter, phone call, visit to admissions).

Right now, you should put the entire BC discussion behind you and focus on two solid weeks of hard work on additional applications.

thank you so much scottj for your input. i have my regular decision applications ready to be sent out as soon as they go through the final proof reading stage. BC was actually my second choice, but because UPenn seems like such a reach for me, and because i actually do love BC a lot, i applied to BC EA rather than penn. but would BC put my grades into a huge perspective when deciding for the RD round?

Not sure what else they wanted. At least deferred

Dear dontstopbelievin : As I had said in my suggestions to you, “Right now, you need to be operating as if Boston College is off the table.” Once you have had a week to reflect on some of our suggestions and you get your regular decision applications into the postal mail, we will come back to your discussion of grades and such. Honestly, I have a serious concern about your AP class scores in senior year, but also have concerns that your essay might not have placed you among the leading candidates. Again, this is all a hunch on my part - and certainly, being in the deferred pool is better than rejection. However, please put your Boston College thinking on the shelf for a couple of weeks and get your other work completed.

okay, thank you.

Dear MMouse : Clearly your numbers are strong, but you were deferred. Let’s offer some questions to provoke some introspection on your part.

Could this be a suspicion on BC’s part that you would not actually attend?

Did you come across as genuine in your essay or contrived?

Did you expect acceptance from Boston College to be a “strong match school” or did you see it as a “stretch” as with so many Top 40 schools in the country? How did you approach the application? Could it be that your essay exhibited an air of elitism that your were owed admission?

Might you have relied too heavily on being a student at a “selective highly ranked high school” and not enough on your own achievements as a student?

Is Boston College truly your top choice, one that you will do anything to attend? Is this deferral simply a blow to your ego as Boston College was one of several in consideration, but not really your school at the top of the list?

Now, if you truly believe that Boston College is your top choice - and only if it is your top choice - you can reach out to your admissions counselor after the turn of the New Year and actually speak of your genuine interest. Notice my on-going use of the word genuine. Be sure that this is about attending Boston College and not about getting an acceptance without an enrollment.

Good luck in thinking sincerely about these questions both on your own and with family.

scottj

Thank you for your advice. I will consider it all.

As for my essay, it was anything but elitist. I would have been honored to be admitted to BC but it was not to be. To be honest, I never even considered a college would turn me down because they thought I might not attend. Does that really happen? Am I naive?

I think maybe I didn’t show enough of myself. My parents tell me I am humble, sometimes to a fault…

Deferred

ACT 35

Quite surprised…

Deferred

Also surprised given the data we have through naviance. 3 people including myself applied to BC through early action, I was deferred the other two were denied. So at least the door isn’t totally closed.
