Oklahoma City University Class of 2021

I loved this program for MT and VP! Has anyone heard and admission decisions yet?

Have not heard anything yet.

Just got an acceptance to Musical Theatre today!

@mtandstuff CONGRATS!! My d got in the Bass Music School only so not sure what she will do.

Son got his acceptance letter to Musical Theater on Feb. 24th!

Congratulations on the acceptances! I have a senior MT major at OCU, getting ready to graduate. If you have any questions at all about OCU, I’ll do my best to help. Just ask away!

@vvnstar My D got accepted to BA Music but applied to MT/VP, she is considering if it is worth it to go and then reapply in the Fall. Do you have any insight on this? Thanks for being willing to help!!

@CL2021KEN - Congratulations to your D on her acceptance to OCU!

My advice about this would not be specific to OCU, but to all schools. She needs to ask herself about worst case scenario -if I go for BA and Music, and re-audition for MT/VP , and do not get in again, will I be happy at this school?

Having said that – there are people every year who re-audition for MT and VP and there are almost always people who subsequently get in those programs. But there is no guarantee and not everyone does.

There are some benefits to a BA though. I know some BA students have done a semester in the Disney College Program - which isn’t possible with the MT and VP degrees if you want to graduate in 4 years. You also have more opportunity to double major in something else if you like. And you take many similar music classes to what the BM majors do. (music theory, aural skills, piano, ensemble, etc…) I believe the voice faculty is different, still very good, just different. And you would not automatically have dance and acting classes so you might ask how those could be incorporated with the BA in Music.

At OCU, in addition to reauditioning for MT/VP, two other degrees you might consider are the BFA Acting program and the Dance Performance major. Both have produced countless numbers of regional and Broadway performers as well. We have seen some MTs switch to Acting because they don’t love the music degree component of the MT degree at OCU (lots of music theory, aural skills, piano, ensemble, etc…) And we’ve seen dance performance majors be cast in TV shows. So there are lots of opportunities and many different avenues to success at the school. MT/VP is just one path.

Because there are so many performance majors, competition to be in shows is pretty fierce. All MTs must audition for all musicals and operas, and many audition for straight shows as well. As do the acting majors, many dance majors, vocal performance majors, etc… And certainly BA Music majors can as well. There are also student run productions in both the music and theatre schools as well as opportunities to be in student choreographed dance shows at the dance school. And lots of community and regional theaters that students audition for as well.

Hope that helps. If you have more questions, ask away!

WOW Thank you @vvnstar for taking the time to reply with such great information. This is some great information I will be sharing with our D as she is trying to make her decision over the next weeks. Appreciated!

How does OCU notify?

@Ouiser my D received and email

@CL2021KEN Thank you!

We heard from OKCU today via email ;-)))

We did too.

I hope you all are getting good news! If you have any questions I can help with, feel free to PM me.

We heard as well!

My D will be joining OCU / OKCU this fall as majoring in music (vocals) with emphasis in pre-med. She wanted MT, but is excited about the vocal health and training she will receive. She will be taking everything the MT students will be taking (except dance which isn’t allowed). So, if any dance moms want to reach out to my daughter, she’ll need privates so she doesn’t fall behind in that area.

@chenggang Current students told my S there is a dance class taught by the seniors that is not an official class but considered a “community class”. He was told that this class is awesome. I bet she would be able to take that class.

That’s exactly what she needs

Have her be on the lookout for auditions for Choreo Show the first semester. Dance performance majors have to choreograph, cast and direct their own productions. Students from many different majors audition for and are cast. It is fun and the quality of dancing is great!

I agree - check out the community classes at the dance school. She should find something that fits with her schedule. Be aware, there could be a small fee for some of those classes just depending on who is teaching it.

Also - she may want to look for things like yoga or other classes on campus that can help with strength and flexibility. Even though they aren’t dance classes - they will improve her dancing.
