I'm attending ODU, in Norfolk Va next year and I will be majoring in civil engineering. After graduation from this program how competitive would I be in getting a job considering I'm going to a small, not very well known school? Is it tough to get an engineering job upon graduation from a school like this?

I’m from VA so I know a bit. ODU is a respected school in VA. Outside of the state I would say your chances of landing a job plummet. As you stated its not a well known school… especially for OOS. Job wise, I would say your limited to VA. Whether thats a problem or not I don’t know. To me it would be, but your obviously not me either. Thats for you to decide.

Now if you stay in the state then be prepared to be beat out by VT and UVA students for jobs. They are HIGHLY recruited in the state… your just gonna have to accept that. But once all the VT and UVA students are recruited your next in line. VCU students might have a shot at your chances too but I personally believe ODU is better. How I percieve engineering in VA:
Tier 1: VT and UVA
Tier 2:ODU, VCU
Tier 3: JMU, GMU, and everybody else

The biggest advantage to ODU is the fact that your in Norfolk. Thats a powerhouse for engineering opportunities. I mean, for example, Norfolk is the Navy’s primary base for the east coast. I don’t know how much civil work the Navy does but they got to have some. A “company” that big is bound to have some.

Try to co op if you can. This will make a huge difference in how you are perceived and what you can offer as a new engineering grad. The tidewater area should offer many opportunities for this.
