Old essays?

Does anyone remember what past years' essay topics have been? I'm really curious; I hear some of them are really interesting. And I want to get an idea of what this year's might be like.

Thanks!

This lists from 2002-2003 to 2007-2008.

Wow. Awesome. Thanks!

They are pretty awesome. Much more fun writing than other essays, at least.

I'm a little confused...are the essays under 2007-2008 for the class of 2007 or 2008 (my class)?

They are the topics for last year's application. The new prompts for the prospective class of 2012 will probably come out some time in July (last year they were released online on July 13th).

I should also point out that you don't have to write on their prompts. If you have an idea for an essay that you really want Chicago to see, you can still use your own!

ok thanks guys!! That really cleared it up. I sorta have an idea for an essay topic, but I think I'll wait and see what prompts Chicago has and if I like those better than my idea.
One more question, the "Why Chicago" prompt is reused every year right? Also are there any other specific directions or is it simply "Why Chicago?"

Question 1. How does the University of Chicago, as you know it now, satisfy your desire for a particular kind of learning, community, and future? Please address with some specificity your own wishes and how they relate to Chicago.

It's generally worded the same every year. You can take a look at last year's application here:

thanks so much!!

I love re-reading the old essay prompts.
My favorites are still #2 from '04-'05 (walking a tight-rope) and #1 from '06-'07 (one page of 'you')

wait, what the hell? they require that you give one sci/math rec?? anyone know of how common that is in comparison to other schools?

Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought that was normal. I'm pretty sure all of my schools wanted one from math/sci.

Chicago was the only school I applied to that required a math/sci rec. In general it's a good idea to have one even if it's not required to show balance, but I guess if you suck at science then maybe not.
