Old laptop or new?

I have an old, inexpensive WalMart special Dell laptop that is 2 years old. It is pretty beat up and I'll need a new keyboard before I go to college if I take it.

The laptop looks ugly and, other than the keyboard, it does work.

There is no webcam - - I'll need to buy a webcam to do Skype with my family and friends.

There is no Lo Jack.

Should I get a new computer WITH LoJack and webcam or just stick with the refurbished old one?

Should I get LoJack for my old computer?

Regarding keyboard--pchub.com is great for used PC products. I replaced my Dell 510M keyboard with a 15USD used keyboard.

Regarding webcam–go for a separate USB-plugin webcam. Built-in webcams aren’t too good, and with a USB-plugin, you can go as high-end as you want.

Regarding looks--garskin.com is fxxkin awesome. I got my Fujitsu laptop all prettied up in a pink waves skin. <3 <3 girlyness

Well, you didn’t give any reasoning for either side, financial issues, etc. All you did was list the cons to the old one. So, uh, maybe a new laptop?

Well, what I am thinking is that my old laptop would be less attractive to thieves.
That could be a major advantage.

By the way, installing a new keyboard is fun says the non-tech-inclined girl

I couldn’t imagine someone basing their purchase on whether or not someone would be inclined to steal it. People don’t steal it while you’re using it, or carrying it around. They steal it when you set it down and go to the restroom, or leave it unattended out in the open. It’s not the computer, it’s the user. As long as you’re responsible with it, you should be fine.

No Lojack. If you’re replacing the keyboard yourself so it doesn’t cost much, keep the thing. You can always get a new computer; it’s not like they’ll stop making them or they’ll start making them run slower.
