Old money in TSAO?

What is up with so many old money kids attending these schools?

  1. because few others can afford it. Old money also has more of a cultural expectation of intergenerational support, so grandparents and other wealthy relatives are more likely to pay. I know plenty of “old money” types who don’t have the cash flow of $70k per year per kid, but trusts (often set up specifically for education) and grandparents cover the cost.

  2. because boarding school is a cultural thing that can seem weird and unnatural to people who aren’t part of that subculture, so it’s a self-selecting group that even applies. If you or your child goes to boarding school, you will be surprised at how many people disapprove, think you’re shipping off your kid because there’s something wrong with them, or make a Hogwarts joke because that’s their only frame of reference for boarding school.

  3. because they know how to play the game to get in (see: cultural thing)

  4. because they’re more likely to get a legacy leg up.

  5. because schools admit for “cultural fit,” so if there’s already a critical mass they know that another kid from the same mold is more likely to be happy.
