Old Threads

It was my understanding that threads which were not posted on for 6 months (or so) would be automatically closed. I consistently come across old threads which have remained open and get a new post way later (often after the OP is long gone) – these typically have to be closed and/or have the new question moved to a new thread by moderators. Just curious what the story is.
