Older Students (Cal)

I will be transfering to Cal this Fall and I'm wondering how many older students, like myself (27 when school starts), will be transfering as well?

There are lots of older students on campus, especially in the transfer center lounge area. I was older than you when I first came here and had no problems fitting in to the campus community. You will find all different ages here from young teenagers (13) to elderly (70) & everything in between so I believe you will find your place on campus…=)

I am transfering in the fall as well and I will be 29 in October. :-)

For housing, do they try to match you up with someone close to your age, or is it random? I’m not saying that I won’t get along or have common interests with my roomates if they are younger (19-20), but it would seem that I would have more in common with someone closer to my age.

I’ll be 28 in October!

I definitely want us older Cal students to get the chance to connect.
My last experience with an 18 year old was last month with my 18 year old niece that I let sleep on my couch for 2 months (and that was, literally, all she did for 2 months).
For me there really isn’t much conversation to be had with someone that age. I sounded like some old lady giving her unwanted advice every 5 minutes!
Amazing how things change when you grow up…

I understand all of you, completely. I’ll be transfering in the spring, and by then will be 25.

@ physicsfem : Haha! I went through that last month. My 17 year old cousin stayed with me for two weeks while her parents went on vacation. I felt like the mother, always telling old high school stories or giving advice when she told me her problems. I felt so, SO old. It’d be nice to hang out with people closer to our age, perhaps go out to dinner together and just chat.

Well, I’m going to be 25 in the fall, so I’m not too much older than the upper division students who are on the traditional college time line. I definitely think the younger 18-20 year-old students pose higher risks of being painful roommates, but even if you get stuck with an immature, unclean, lazy or loud roommate it’s not like you are going to be completely cut off from socializing. You’ll be in upper division courses which will increase the average age right there. If you’re going to the upper division apartments that will put you in a population with a higher rate of 21+ students. It looked like there were a lot of older transfers at CalSO too.

I’m transferring to Cal starting in the second six week summer session and I’ll be 25 next week :)

If you go to CalSO, there’s a section where they give you actual figures for the transfer student breakdown. I think they said that 500+ entering transfer students were considered re-entry students because they’re over 24, and if there are around the same number from last year, that means there’s nearly a thousand transfer students who are all 25 or older. So I’m thinking you’ll be fine. As for housing, did you apply for transfer and upperdivision student housing? Then you’d be guaranteed at least a 20-year-old as a roommate, but otherwise I doubt age is a factor when they pair up roommates.

FeeFee-I’m pretty sure that you are correct. I know a guy that transferred last fall (08). He is 25 or 26 and said that he was paired up with a freshman roommate. I don’t know what he put down as his housing preference, but I don’t think that they go out of their way to make sure that you are paired up with someone that is the same age as you.

I am so happy that I found a guest house to rent on the Cal rentals website. I have my own space, can bring my dog and save a buttload of cash.

@KC: Heh, that’s exactly what I’m doing. Renting and brining along man’s best friend. I woulda been SO bummed if I couldn’t bring my pup with me.
