OLDTIMERS:Please post your child update

Just curious, prouddad, why do you write in that format with the shortened lines?

I'll work on the cloning after
I finish perfecting cold fusion.
If you hear a loud "boom", I've
got it down pat.

and lkf725,
Just hit "enter" wherever you
want your line to end. Nice variety.
Thanks, prouddad.

I wanted to dredge up this thread because bhg, it was nice to see your name and the names of many other "oldtimers". I didn't feel like I could post anything at the time since S was in the midst of NCAA SuperRegionals AND finals (they took some finals in their hotel in Corvallis) and was threatening to fail everything so I first had to see what happened (straight A's). He was home for a couple of days and then off to his summer baseball assignment on the East Coast.

He still seems really happy at Stanford, has chosen math and computer science as his major and particularly loves the latter. He has fantastic friends--both on the team and made through the dorm and classes--really fine and caring people. He still loves his sport the most, with a passion, but I am loving watching his mind expand as well. He now picks up what seem to me "dry" history books for the pleasure of learning. I don't know if this is the inspiration of college and being around other very motivated students, or just normal maturation. He also manages to attend lectures and concerts on campus. Stanford has been an absolutely perfect fit for him, it seems, though I won't deny that the demands on student-athletes are absolutely crushing at times.

Most important of all, he is just a delight to be around and watch--such a sweet kid, so modest and friendly and polite.

My younger daughters are 16 now and about to be high school juniors....one has a summer full of ambitious activities (Landmark Volunteers and summer program at Brown) and the other is kind of hanging with her friends, doing a little bit of dance...definitely not identical twins! They have taken their first practice SATs and I was happy to see that their scores were quite respectable--one stronger in math and one in verbal/writing...so the college issue is looming again in our household, but it feels so much more manageable now that I've been through it once.

Patient -- Great to hear the update! What an impressive guy, to ace a math-computer science major while playing sports at his level. Stanford does, indeed, sound like the perfect fit for him.

Finally had a chance to read this post. I enjoy hearing from other old-timers. I find I am more helpful to others, having learned so much on this forum.
My S completed soph year, and earned an upper class merit award. Still double major in CS and an sci field. Worked research last summer, and this summer internship in CS field. Very involved in one EC. Its been a long time since I've tried to give him advice, as I don't even comprehend the titles of his classes.
