Ole miss and Mississippi state

Hey guys so ive applied to both Ole miss and Mississippi state and as i get closer to making decisions on where to go, i realize i have no idea what mississippi is really like. Im from the north but always wanted to go south and i heavily plan on joining a fraternity. Im aware ill probably be called a yankee but i was wondering what fraternitys are best for a northern kid to join

You may want to look up the fraternity directory at each school and browse their web sites.

Can you visit either school?

You’ll find out which fraternities will work for you when you get there and meet the brothers.

Yes, by all means peruse the websites at each.

From my perch from afar, I would opine that U of M provides the stereotypical southern fraternity experience you say you are looking for. I like what I have heard about MSU and I knew a northern fellow who very much enjoyed his time there. I have the impression that student life in general at MSU is not as formal and tradition-bound as it is at U of M. Your mileage may vary. Incidentally, MSU is the stronger of the two when it comes to STEM education. Both have very strong English/Literature/Writing Departments. Ole Miss is nearer to Memphis than MSU.

Are you going to be ok with all the math required?

Ole Miss and Miss St are very different. Miss St is very rural, and more STEM oriented. Ole Miss is very southern and more liberal arts.

While I don’t think you’ll be called, a yankee, at either school, you may find that there aren’t enough OOS students at Miss State that aren’t from border states. There are a number of Alabama students at Miss St because it’s so close to the border and their merit req’ts are lower.

For being in the same state, the schools have very different cultures. Like mom2collegekids said, MSU has a very rural student base. The students are drawn from primarily agricultural areas, and pickups, chewing tobacco and trucker caps being common.

Ole Miss tends to draw the wealthier in-state kids that end up in the professional fields. Accountants, bankers, lawyers, teachers, etc. tend to send their kids to Ole Miss. Old Miss is 38 percent OOS, while MSA is 24 percent OOS. A visit to both schools would be recommended, especially coming from up north.

What are your parents saying about paying for those schools? how much will they pay each year?

What is your weighted GPA?

Is your SAT score for 2 sections? Is that your Math + CR?

If you visit Miss St, then you might also want to visit Alabama…Bama is only about 75 minutes away. Both schools are close to the shared border.

Luckily and blessed, i come from a family with money and id never brag about it but its not much of a problem.

GPA- 2.8/4 UW
SAT- 960 (CR+M)

Weighted GPA probably a 3

I have a child at Ole Miss and have a million friends with kids at state…State is more “laid-back”…don’t be fooled…there are plenty of affluent folks at State…but it’s not as “in your face” as Ole Miss. My child ADORES Ole Miss and we are not the traditional Ole Miss peeps…saying all that to say that either would be great. However, Ole Miss does seem to attract more OOS students…and from what I can tell…everyone seems to get along great. My child has close friends from all over…D.C., Cali, Australia, GA, FL, NYC…and she is just a gal from MS/LA. So, from our experience and from what we know about the kids/families that support/attend State…my opinion is that Ole Miss is a little more progressive. Also, Ole Miss is more the place for doctors/attorneys while State is more engineers/computer science although that is not by any means the rule…

The other thing I would say about Ole Miss and State is that you are on a college campus and not really in “typical Mississippi”…so you are going to have a less “traditional red-neck” experience than if you just came down to MS and lived somewhere…you might be in for some serious culture shock if you did that. Yes, it’s not the north, but I think you will enjoy being on either campus. Just an opinion.

What about applying to Southern Mississippi?

I’m not sure if you’re still deciding but I’m a student at Mississippi State and can offer some insight. I enjoy my school a lot and am having a positive experience. I have friends at Ole Miss and the people above are correct in saying it is a different culture. Ole Miss is more traditional while Mississippi State is laid-back. This also can be said about Greek Life. I can speak for Mississippi State when I say it’s a fun way to get involved and meet new people, especially being out of state. Greek Life is solid at Mississippi State and it’s more inclusive than other Southern schools. They tend to care about who you are as a person, not what color your skin is or what your parents do for a living or how much money they have. Mississippi State gets a bad rap for being “the cow college” or “rural school” and while it is big on agriculture and engineering, you won’t feel out of place at all if you don’t major in either of those or drive a truck or chew tobacco like many might assume. As stated above, you’ll meet many affluent students who drive BMWs, Mercedes, and other nice cars. I will say that both schools are benefiting from recent success in their football programs which has led to lots of growth on campus and in the surrounding towns. Give both a visit and see where you fit in!
