I have recently been admitted to all three schools. I have been admitted to the University of Alabama and Ole Miss for biology and pre veterinary health advising. I have also been admitted to Louisiana State University for pre veterinary medicine. I would like to know, which of these schools may be best for my major. As well as, the Greek life of each, I am interested in greek life and I am a Kappa Delta legacy. What the campuses are like? Size? Atmosphere? I'm visiting app of my schools this coming February and I am currently waiting to hear back from Auburn as well!

Bama is gorgeous and has an amazing Greek life, if that interests you. Bama is a very friendly campus with profs that are very student-centered.

You should visit as soon as you can.

Did you qualify for merit at these schools? What are your parents saying about the costs? What are your stats?

Go to the very popular Bama forum here on CC for more info:

If you’re interested in animal science, I would strongly suggest going to a land grant university. Of the ones you listed, only LSU has programs in agriculture and animal science/ management. Are you also considering Auburn and Mississippi State U?

why is that, @whenwhen? surely the unis named by the OP have large investments in agriculture and animal science. I’m not understanding what distinction you’re making.

No they don’t. The only universities mentioned by the OP with real ag/ animal science programs are LSU and Auburn (didn’t see the last sentence by the OP until after I posted).

Any of the listed schools are fine for pre-vet students.

I am more interested in this student’s stats.

The OP may have the stats to be a successful pre-vet major, but pre-vet is like pre-med…many try, but few succeed. If this student doesn’t have the stats that would likely lead to having the right stats to qualify for vet school, then selecting a school because of Land-grant status may quickly become moot.

Auburn doesn’t give much in merit for OOS students.

the state flagships of Alabama and Mississippi are not invested in animal science? how did that happen?

Not as much as Alabama for sure but $64K for Presidential plus a technology stipend…that beats NCSU and VaTech, etc. Auburn does require higher stats as well, but for a quality school alternative that’s pretty good money.

Alabama is invested in marine biology. The vet school isn’t at Bama. However, a school doesn’t have to have a vet school to be fine for pre-vet. Vet schools require the basics: Bio, Chem, Ochem, Physics, math. they also require Animal Nutrition, which vet schools let you take online at other schools if your school doesn’t offer it.

Are you in-state for any of these? If not, what are your in-state options? Vet school can get quite expensive, so you need to cut costs as an undergraduate. Out-of-state universities are often pretty expensive if you won’t qualify for large merit scholarships.

Vet school requires several hundred hours of animal handling and veterinary experience. Students who have experience with both small animals (dogs, cats, birds, etc.) and large animals (cattle, sheep, pigs, etc.) have an advantage in the admissions process, as all vets are required to be trained to both areas, and too many prospective students are only comfortable with companion animals. For this reason, I usually strongly recommend attending universities with vet schools or land grant colleges with large animal science programs, which have many such opportunities available.

Look into UGA as well. It’s stronger than the colleges you listed, particularly in ecology, and has a vet school. Athens is a great little college town, and it’s not uncommon for UGA to waive OOS tuition for strong applicants.

I’m currently waiting on an admission decision from auburn!

Also I am an out of state for all of these schools, I live in Marblehead Massachusetts

Even though they do not have a vet school? Could I still be successful at Alabama or Ole miss?
