Is Ole Miss a good school? I ran the price calculator and it came out very cheap for me. I am planning on majoring in something business related, or possibly hospitality.
One of my biggest worries with Ole Miss is the conservatism. Are the stereotypes of it being very conservative true? I am from Michigan and would definitely consider myself liberal. Would I have trouble fitting in? Thanks!
I have 2 kids there now. We are from Columbus OH and they both love it. It’s conservative but not stifling. You will have a great time. It blows away most college towns including Ann Arbor. The cost is very reasonable. Keep your GPA above 3.0 unweighted and retake the ACT to get above 25 if needed. The money that SEC schools gives for good test scores is spot on. My kids best friends are from FL, MO, AR, TX, MA and CA. Once you visit you wont want to go anywhere else. Accounting and New Media journalism is highly rated and my son is hospitality management. Great placement after graduation.
@upperarlington How does your son like hospitality management? I received a 33 ACT and 4.056 (3.89 unweighted) GPA. Also, being about 20 minutes from Ann Arbor and having parents as Umich alum and a sister there now, how does Oxford blow it away??
He loves it. Oxford people are very friendly, they speak to you on the street, better restaurants and shopping and bars, better weather, way better females. Football weekends in the Grove, smaller classes; only 20K students to get to know your professors, much better price point, SEC football blows away the B1G. I am an IU alum and I thought Bloomington was pretty but Oxford much nicer. Lots of Midwest kids down there also. There’s a reason.
@upperarlington – my d and I are going back to Oxford in Nov to take a 2nd look. We love the town and Ole Miss is #1 choice for her right now. Not sure if she will be swayed by some private invitations that she has from Baylor. We will see. I’m rooting for Ole Miss because she will automatically get (close to) a full ride. Is your son in the honors college?
Also, we will be spending time in the square, and we did last visit too. Are there other areas of Oxford that we should check out to get a complete vibe for culture of the school/town. I’m wondering if we should try to get a glimpse of off-campus housing too. Also, would you recommend that we try to eat a meal on campus to get a feel for the student life? If so, where?
Thanks so much. I love learning from an insider’s persoective!
My kids aren’t honors college but that is a great program. Not any harder then general, but smaller classes and she can get one of the newer dorms for living. We looked all around the SEC and Big ten and it always came back to Oxford for both of them because of the safety and size and student experience. Any of the older areas off the square are neat to see, Willaim Faulkners home Rowan Oak for a quick tour, Sardis Lake is 10 minutes away where the kids go on the weekends. The off campus housing is top notch, my son lives at The Retreat which is like a resort for 590 a month. Campus food is awesome so don’t worry about grabbing a meal there. Fine dining on the Square is Oxford Grillhouse, Mcewens, Mesquite Chophouse, City Grocery and Boure. Any place there is great. Jackson avenue, a main drag can get congested after 3 pm. The bus system there is great and the kids can use it for free. My kids also use Uber and Lyft on the weekends when they go out if they have imbided a bit! Hotel wise, the Inn on campus is great, The Graduate and The Courtyard off the square are places we have stayed in and they have shuttles to take you around town.
