Olin's Website

Last kid going to college. So much for all my knowledge of music schools. Anyway...

I regularly have problems getting to Olin's website (like today). Anyone else having problems? One would think an engineering school would know how to keep its website up.

Hmmm–I haven’t had any problems getting there, but there are some problems with links, which they are aware of–so it is possibly due to maintenance on those? Just a guess.

I’ve never had a problem getting to the website - haven’t seen it down yet. Maybe I have just been lucky

Opera dad - have you contacted the webmaster? I’ve never have had a problem getting on, but have found broken links. I always forward my finds to the webmaster who fixes them. This website is fairly new (about 6 months).

Hmm…it seems to be working for me. Also, please try not to judge Olin’s engineering-ness on the website. From the beginning of time, Olin students have lamented EVERY version of the website and coveted other schools websites. I assure you, if they would let the students make the site, it would be much better. But someone (likely the trustees) seem to have this fetish with paying other people to do things like this, so the websites are always outsourced. The students had some feedback ability on this version but only on some details and not the overall design. It’s actually quite a sore point among the students…

/end rant against Olin websites

In general the website has worked for me. Occasionally I do stumble into a broken link [Olin College](http://www.olin.edu/)

Hmm… I just tested and I did hit a blip. But I clicked Reload and all was well.

If you still have problems with a specific link, post it here so we can check it… include which browser. Perhaps somehow it has become a “blocked” site for you. (We had a virus problem last year that gave us frustrating redirects to Bing on the home computer.)

I had sometimes wish that there were more online processes for Olin admissions etc. But same was true for Mudd, another small STEM school.

It is not a specific link problem. It is failing to get a response at all from the website ([Olin College](http://www.olin.edu)). I have only visited their website a few times, primarily on the weekends, to research them. On more than 3 occassions, the main page, and search results links to admissions pages, would not return a response.

Note: I have no opinion about their website conent. I am just commenting on how often it has been down when I try to acess it. Maybe they do major website updates at the time that I would normally be looking at them. Maybe the students do maintain the servers, and that’s when they test things out. Who knows. Just seemed odd to be down that much.

Note2: My comment about an engineering school keeping its website up is more an ironic oberservation than a criticism of the school.

When I tried your link, it never loaded for me (at least before I gave up). But when I type "<a href="http://olin.edu/“>http://olin.edu/</a>” or olin.edu in my browser, it loads immediately. So maybe try it without the “www.”

If it makes you feel any better, OperaDad, I’ve been having the same issues. I’ve been unable to locate the source of the problem, but about 25% of the time when I try to access [Olin College](http://www.olin.edu) I am directed to an error page. Let me know if you figure out what’s wrong. Could it be a problem with a specific web browser? I’m using Chrome, what about you?

I use Chrome as well. I still have trouble if i put in the www. But if you leave it out and just do “olin.edu”, it works fine for me.

I’ve been noticing some of the same concerns as OperaDad. (The issues were likely always there… with me just noticing them more now). Next time it happens I’ll look at the hints above to see if I can isolate which browser etc.

For some reason it feels like it it is more of a problem when I start at a Google link.

I use Firefox. Have not have any problems. I usually look at the blogs or one or two other pages every week.

hmmm… I often use Chrome.

I finally broke down and installed Mozilla Firefox on the home computer. The Olin webpages do seem to open better with Firefox. In general I like the way it allows options for allowing blocked popups.

I use Firefox on work laptop, but at home historically I’ve used Internet Explorer. And also Google Chrome (nostly for FB). Today I could not get FAFSA SAR report to play nice with Internet Explorer. That got me into action. Our SAR does works with Firefox.

FAFSA says you can’t use Firefox, but I used it last year and this year with no problem. I have not used IE in over a year. Found it sloooooooooow it may have been improved since then.

I needed Firefox to view the FAFSA SAR report. (There was probably a way to work around the popups in ie, but it seemed time to switch). I did the input in ie. Never got import from IRS to work - darn.

I got the IRS import to work. Cool!
