Do the Olympiads actually check if you are a permanent resident or a US citizen when you move on to the next stage. An example would be for USABO or USNCO. Do they know if you are not a Permanent resident but go to the semifinalist exam?
The USABO Open/Semifinal exams require you to pledge (sign) that you have followed the rules of the competition. The Test Administrator will verify legal status beforehand, too. The USNCO also requires a signature (pledge) before writing.
Really? wow that is very stringent. For USNCO, could you just lie about your legal status and go to national level and nobody would know? I don’t expect to do that good at nationals so I don’t think they would find out.
I don’t know if my Test administrator does that…?
For example, on the USABO website, it says
“Each student must be a citizen or legal permanent resident of the U.S. and be able to provide proof of US passport.”
for the open and semifinal exam but they might not ask for the US passport.
Thanks
…just follow the rules fam
In my experience, they don’t ask for a passport, but the test administrator could find out.
I wouldn’t take a chance and lie. Wouldn’t it be mortifying to be challenged and caught?? Yikes. Besides it not being the right thing to do.
How is it stringent to restrict the competitions to U.S. legal residents? You could lie about your legal status and sign the document, but it would only show that you’re a failure in ethics, no matter how successful you are on the tests.
I mean, what’s the worst that can happen? I just want a chance to gauge my ability, even if I’m not allowed to go to the study camp (I understand that). I am really passionate about some of the olympiads and just lying shouldn’t be a big deal… right?
Wrong.
If you want to gauge your ability, you can take practice tests.
What’s the worst that could happen if I lied and said that I was a citizen and partipated in these events?
Fam.
The risk is way greater than the reward! If you really want to know, you can email USNCO and USABO. Consequences that I’d predict are losing the trust of your teacher and counselors and everything that goes along with that trust.
Gauge your ability with past exams. Here you go…

If you are an international student and you report your rank in US Olympiad competitions (the final round) on college applications, colleges will know right away that you don’t have integrity.
You may be able to take the preliminary round tests. Ask your local organizer.
Ok, Thanks everyone! What about for Siemens (I live in the US but im not a citizen/green card holder)
I know I can participate in the physics Olympiad and Math Olympiad but I can’t for the other two.
Failure in ethics? Come on man. I do not think participating in an academic competition in which he is passionate in is tantamount to abolishing his ethical system. Sometimes, these small violations are justifiable.
