Does anyone here watch/care about the Olympics? And is anyone else feeling some shady business going on with the Chinese athletes, especially in womens gymnastics?

YES! how is that tiebreaker fair at all???

I know!!! that was ridiculous. And Nastia’s routine was obviously better BY FAR. and yesterday on the vault with Alicia Sacramone??? The Chinese girl fell!!!

I know that they don’t have any Chinese judges when the Chinese are competing, but it’s still really fishy…

Yep. Not to mention that those girls aren’t even 16.

I’ve been watching gymnastics a lot recently; it’s very entertaining. China’s gymnasts must be seriously under 13 years old. I thought the way they judged Nastia’s and that Chinese girl’s final score for the uneven bars was just ridiculous. Nastia should have been awarded the gold, along with the Chinese girl, not reduced to silver.

The age thing is really unfair too.. the whole thing just makes me really mad, and I don’t understand why nobody is DOING anything about it!!

You can’t prove it. Just cause you might suspect it doesn’t mean something’s true. Heck, we suspected Iraq had weapons of mass destruction, but never found any. They might have actually had weapons, but we can’t find any proof, therefore, end of conversation. I’m not saying that I think they are actually 16, but there’s no way to prove this, and the FIG and IOC has looked into it and made a decision.

They should just get rid of the age rule. And neither Nastia nor Hexin should’ve won the gold. Yang should have! Did no one else gasp at that routine?

And tiebreaking rules are rules, no matter how flawed. They were created before the Beijing Olympics, so it’s not like China in those seconds decided on a procedure that would favor their gymnasts.

I know they’d already set up the tiebreaker procedure, but that was just ridiculous. And the judges know almost nothing about competitive gymnastics to begin with.

Yeah, for real. The judges from those countries haven’t even won medals in gymnastics, or so I’ve heard. Or at least some of them haven’t.

I know that they haven’t proved the age thing, but it’s still a little ridiculous. and jenkster, I completely agree with you about Yang’s, it was really good. But there has just been sooooo many strange judging decisions going on that it was starting to seem a little TOO weird. But i suppose the fault can just be placed with the inept judges from countries that haven’t won gymnastics medals.

I really think all age restrictions should be removed. The Olympics are about the best of the best, right?

The olympics are boring, save 2 people and 1 team.

what happened to the tie anyway? i haven’t really heard much about it, i watched the event but i thought they would do a rematch since that’s the most fair thing to do..

i’ve totally noticed that things are really fishy in these olympics..i don’t know about open to all ages, b/c aren’t you supposed to be competing against your peers; and well, a 6 year old is not a peer to a 16 year old, no matter how you try to defend it.

Everyone keeps bagging on China and the age controversy and everything, but China just has been dominating so far. And since it’s in Beijing, of course you get home court advantage. As for the tie in gymnastics, it’s in the gymnastics rulebook…that’s what happens when there’s a tie, so why are American complaining?

China doesn’t have 45 gold medals with cheating

i don’t see how that chinese girl beat nastia. she was waving her hands to keep herself from falling off the beam.

It’s ridiculous and somewhat comical the griping amongst us Americans because we are jealous maybe-- that’s the only thing I can come up with. Americans have also been involved in cheating scandals during the Olympics (Marion Jones comes to mind).

hopeful: even if the documents are correct, the youngest would be 13/14, so obviously that is not even close to 6. Get your facts straight. Many of the greatest critics such as Bela Karolyi have been the one who have always been against age restrictions, so now that a serious competitor comes along, we complain.

For gymnastics amateurs, Sacramone had significantly lower start values than that Chinese, and difficulty is a large part of the score, so even if she did fell, she would have gotten higher scores. It’s in the math-- if you’re not happy, then go complain about the judging system. As for Liukin’s bar routine, rules are rules. That’s the way it’s been established beforehand, so if Liukin had gotten better execution scores, she would’ve won.

As a gymnastics fan, I am dismayed that the actual gymnastics haven’t been the focus and instead we are whining to a ridiculous level and coming up with all the excuses possible to make up for our disappointment.

^ haha, i think i was exaggerating a bit on the age… i think gymnastics has been the focus..i don’t watch the olympics just so that i can complain about the US didn’t win. I guess pride will always makes us a little annoyed by the way things turn out.

the rules just need to be changed

To the people who say that Alicia Sacramone deserves the bronze for vault: Did you even see Cheng Fei’s first vault? It was amazing. On the other hand, neither of Alicia Sacramone’s vaults were that great, and in both cases, her landings were sloppy. Just because Cheng messed up her first fault, it doesn’t mean she should automatically lose. Also, as mentioned earlier, her start values were higher.

i don’t see how that AGE thing is unfair. if those girls were really 12 or something and still that pretty good, then they SHOULD have the medals. to be a little meaner, maybe the others shouldn’t even be AT the olympics, cuz that would just put them to shame. no offence to any of the other gymnasts. but c’mon seriously, ppl tend to make such a big fuss out of this whole “oh china’s cheating b/c it let underaged girls compete!” but you know what, the olympics should not prevent ppl from participating b/c of age. if anyone deserves the be in the games b/c of his/her ABILITY, then why not?

btw, i heard that tie was decided b/c that chinese girl had a smaller average deduction point per game or something of that sort. why is that unfair? unless she really had a f***ed up routine compaired to the american girl’s routine and the judges STILL gave her a high score. then that’s cheating. but otherwise, nope i’m not buying what ppl r sayin these days. take those as jealous complaints. no offence
