OMG help in choosing courses

Ok, I want to be a pre-med as a Biology and Society Major.

So for my first semester, I've decided to take:

Chem 2070
Math
FWS?
PE
and a Social science course

Should I be taking calculus for my math credit, if so, should it be Math 1110? If not, should I be taking Math 1105 then?

What are the courses part of the "Society" part of my major consist of?

If you’re a premed, I’d definitely recommend Calculus. Out of the schools that have Math reqs, there are many that will take either calc or stats, but some will take only calc. If you’re decent at Math, I’d go for the calc.

At least for me, my goal in fulfilling pre reqs for med school is to give myself as many options as possible, so that way if I find a school I really like, I won’t kick myself for not having taken a semester of biochem or a semester (or two even) of calculus.

When are you planning on taking bio?

oy vey

[Department of Science & Technology Studies](http://www.sts.cornell.edu/programbsocrequirement.php)

Can I take biology in my second semester? I read somewhere that it is recommended for pre-meds to take 2 sciences or 1 science and 1 math for first semester.

You really need two years of biology. Some require it, some don’t, but AFAIK 2 years of bio is standard. Yes you can take it later, but if you start later, you have to take the MCAT later, which could mean applying later, which could mean being a year late and having a gap year. Not necessarily a bad thing, but just something to keep in mind.

Personally, I’d take both bio and chem first year. It’s a lot easier to fit in a math class either spring semester or soph year, because you can probably do with just one semester of calculus. Or you can take Math instead of a soc. sci. course. I was going to do that (bio, chem, and calc) but decided I want to study abroad and so I needed to start a language now, so I’m taking French instead of cal, because I can either take that next semester, or next year.

Do they care what type of biology i take? Is there like a general biology course like general chemistry?

[Sample Schedules](http://www.human.cornell.edu/che/Academics/Undergraduate/Student_Services/For_New_Students/For_Freshman/Sample-Schedules.cfm)

Students in Biology and Society should take these courses as freshmen:

**Biology and Society (pre-med)

Bio 1101 & 1102
Chem 1560 or 2070
NS 1150 or HD 1150
FWS and PE*

Biology and Society (non pre-med)

Bio 1101 & 1102
HD 1150 or Psych 1101
NS 1150 or HD 1150 or PAM 2300
*FWS and PE

Thanks; but where can I find the Biology options like 1101? It’s not under the Bio and Soc courses or Chemistry courses

[Courses of Study 2008-2009](http://courses.cuinfo.cornell.edu/CoScourses.php?college=AS&dept=Biology+%26amp%3B+Society+Major)

Nor can I find HD 1150

Because general biology courses will be listed under the heading “BIO G.” This indicates it’s a general biology course.

OH I found it thanks.

How does it looks so far:

Chem 2070
Bio G 1101
Fre 2060
MILS 2270 (PE)
FWS

Do I have to take Bio G 1103 Lab concurrently with Bio G 1101? Or can I take that in the next semester?

you can only take 1103 in the fall. 1104 is in the spring.
