My family earns ~120k and Northwestern only gave me 5k in financial aid?!?!?

4k loans and 1k work study. What?!?!?!?

Do you think I can ask them to reconsider? I was seriously thinking they'll give me AT LEAST 15k aid...

dude thats not even aid…its loans which u will have to pay back…did nu give u a scholarship? i got 30 grand from them plus 10 grand worth of grants but my income is under 60 gradn so i guess ur too rich

Yeah, that’s odd, mine makes 150K and I got about 20K in aid. Are your family’s assets and investments worth a lot, and/or do you have a large college fund?

Well, I used Collegeboard’s financial aid calculator and it said my EFC was ~24k.

Northwestern thinks my EFC should be ~double that…

omg…

Should I contact the financial aid office and let them reconsider?

Ummm… even with your income, you should get at least 10-15K. Does your family own any other property? Owning additional homes, land, and such really impacts your aid. It’s a good thing my family decided not to buy extra property last year. Lol.

My family income last year is about 120k. Both of my parents lost their jobs in January. NU offers me 17k + some loan and workstudy. I am grateful for the financial aid, but it will be very difficult for my family to contribute over 30k each year unless they sell the house.

Will NU reconsider if I appeal for more aid?

My family income is kinda low but I wasn’t expecting this much! By far Northwestern’s financial aid is the best!! Wow.

Lol about the same income and got 21K in grants. I’m appealing because I got more from other similar schools.

basically identical situation for me! I was shocked. but i just got a 23k grant from cornell so i guess ill be going there.

My family’s income is around the same as yours. I got 9k (2k in work study, 3k in loans, 4k in “NU Scholarship”). This is horrible…How much of the time does appealing actually work?

Our EFC was about 19K and my son got grants/scholarships to cover most and then a small loan and then we owed the EFC.

I would inquire why yours is so low? Could be a case of accept/deny or could be a simple error.

how do you even check your financial aid?? I haven’t received a finaid letter yet.

Same thing happened to me monkeystar…I got 38,000 in LOANS??? I don’t even understand that but that’s what my package said. My income bracket is around 100k but i guess we have a lot of assets. Still its quite disconcerting. Planning on calling the fin aid office.

I’ve gotten 30k in scholarships.

I need another 10k before Northwestern even becomes a consideration financially. :/

i think if your family income is above like 120k, they look at ur stats (for merit aid) and if you have sibilings who goes college (then they will give more)

Does FinAid come by email or snail mail?

It comes by snail mail but can be checked online.

rpo72- The EXACT same thing happened to me. We make just under 100K and got 38,000 in loans. We own our house, I’m thinking that’s what did it…still, they can’t expect us to pay half our income on college each year!
It’s frustrating…I was pretty set on NU.

kyo, NU does NOT award merit aid. All scholarships are need-based. If you have no need, you will get no aid, regardless of your stats.

Look under “Who is Eligible for a Northwestern Scholarship?”

Northwestern does provide one type of merit aid: that is if you are a National Merit Finalist and name NU as your first choice. However, this amount is only up to 2k, so it doesn’t go far aid-wise. But it is hard to get and if you do receive it is a wonderful distinction to put on a resume.
