Just when I thought I was all set, and my parents had their minds set to eating nothing but leftover mac and cheese for 4 years so I can afford to go to BC, I got accepted off the waitlist from an Ivy, and they’re offering me a package that would allow me to go there for about $6-7K/yr less than BC.

Unless I can get this worked out, then my folks are putting the pressure on about me dropping BC in favor of the other school.

Please, please, if anyone who works in Student Financial Services (SFS) at BC is reading this, can you explain why BC has made the conscious decision to drive away smart kids who can’t afford BC’s tuition, or who can get much better deals just about anywhere else? Is there some diabolical plot to undo the past two decades of raising BC’s academic reputation by allowing other schools to cherry-pick a whole income slice of the population?

Anyone at BC listening? Anyone? Hello??? Is this thing on?

Was it Penn? (I looked at your previous posts.) Are you interested in biz/Wharton?

I can’t speak for BC specifically, but I’ve found several GREAT colleges like BC that just don’t have the endowment to afford middle class kids. For example, several kids on cc have had to turn down their first choice (Wake Forest) for other schools with better need-based aid; $10k more in loans each year is a LOT. No-loan schools like Dartmouth and Vandy are really hard to pass up, not to mention Harvard/Yale/P’ton offering need-based aid to families up to $180k

Good luck on your decision.

fwiw: personally, I woulda gone for that massive grade inflation in Providence. :D

DukeoffEarl: You are the 2nd or 3rd person on here in the past week who got into UPenn from their waitlist. UPenn must be targetting BC students lolz

BC is not “driving away smart kids” – the Ivies are reeling them in with prestige and money. BC’s endowment isn’t anywhere near as big as most of the Ivies, so it can’t compete with them when it comes to financial aid.

Regardless of whatever the Duke is planning on majoring in, he should go to the school which costs less, as to put a smaller financial strain on his family.

Go to UPenn, comrade. That is my opinion, but it is your decision to make. Good luck.

Penn is more prestigious but it is in Pennsylvania. (No offense.) Have you tried finagling with a financial aid person in student services? Trust me. I got plenty out of them my entire BC career. You’d be surprised at how much BC grant money can miraculously become available. The money is there. Some people just don’t ask for it.

If u would major in Pre-med or something else, I would say BC. As the poster above mentioned, Penn is only prestigious in PA, but BC is known all over the US. But for business majors, school really matters. So, if ur really a business major, go with UPENN.

UPenn is so much better than BC…you would be crazy not to take the Upenn offer, especially for business. I am a Finance exec and have done recruiting for Fortune 50 company…Upenn is so much better.

^ Nope. I’ll be in Chestnut Hill next year. Sorry I lost track of this thread.

It was a week of ups and downs and a big ups at the end. I went to Penn and took a close look. Met with math profs and looked hard at the fit and environment and other intangibles. I then went back to BC and did the same (again). Then took the $40 bus to Penn over the weekend and got an overnight. I’m not a finance/business major, so the whole Wharton<->Carroll thing never entered into it. In the end, it came down to BC. I just decided yesterday late. Thanks to all who commented back, even those who told me I am nuts. I can’t explain except to say that in the end it was a clear decision without any hidden facts or undiscussed options. Eagle-bound! w00t!
