OMG.....

I interned for the Governor this summer and I asked the Communications Manager to write me a letter. But I realized just now that I have three supplementary recommendations which would be on the edge even if they were all excellent. But I just got a copy of her rec and it's not....great. Not good at all in fact. SHOOT.....it's short and it just talks about me very generally....."hard worker.....diligent......mature...." you know all that general stuff. No specific examples.

How much will this hurt?!?!?!?

Is there anything I can do!?!?!??!!?

HELP!!!!!

yea i got one of those too, i expected more, but i think shes kinda a bad writer...ya extracurricular was spelled wrong too :(...but i got her to send it to a biiig time safety for me so i dont think it hurt me too much.

Depends if ur scores are all there and ur transcript is strong, i doubt it will make or break u. It just wont help u as much as it couuld.

So don't send the letter. No need to send supplementary materials that aren't helpful.

You don't need the letter. It's not as if the colleges are asking for proof of your internship. What may be of most interest to colleges anyway would be what you learned about yourself and the world from the experience (things you could put in your essay or say in your interview), not what the communication coordinator thought of you.

What did you do during your internship? Most h.s. interns do nothing more than deliver packages, answer the phones, make copies and similar activities. If that's what you did, then there's not much impressive that the comm coordinator could write anyway. If you want to highlight your internship experience, you'd have to do that yourself, not rely on your supervisor.

Better to have a supp recommendation from a person who supervised you in an activity in which you won acclaim or took leadership.

unfortunately my supplementary letter is more meanigful than my main requried one. which is hwy i got a supplementary in the first place. :)

Why are your reccs so bad?
Do you take the time to talk with your references about your background, interests, what you hope to get from your college experience? Do you give them a memo highlighting what you did under their direction? If you're relying on them to remember what you did, then their memory is not likely to be as sharp on those things as yours is.

Did you do anything to make yourself stand out? If, for instance, you just quietly did what you were told during internship, then the supervisor wouldn't be able to say anything more about you than would be said about any other clerical assistant.
