omg what will happen!

Ok, so here's the deal.............................................. .................................................. .................................................. ........................

Chance me!

First Generation, low-income
Vietnamese Male, California

SAT: 2110 (740 CR, 630 M, 740 W)
SAT II: 760 Literature, 750 US History

GPA: ~4.3 weighted, 3.86 unweighted
Rank: 7/375
Course Load: Took all AP courses that my school's schedule allows
Senior course: all AP and honors except 1 class
AP scores: 3 in us hist, and 3 in eng comp (It was b/c I only had one semester of each course, and had work, but bad excuse)

ECs/Activities: pretty weak.
Student leader in church youth group
Black belt and student instructor in martial arts
officer in two school clubs
Piano certificate of merit advanced/senior award
Congressional Page in House of Representatives

Teacher and counselor recs: Good, I hope!
Essays: good..but subjective of course

Chances for this desperate student's ultimate ultimate ultimate super duper dream school since forever and ever and beyond (which is DUKE(!!), btw)?????!!!

My friend was a congressional page!! Do you know Mary Ellen??

But uh, anyway, I think you have a shot but it's not completely out of the question. I don't really know how much the page thing counts for.

Sorry, but I'm just not seeing anything that truly makes you jump out as unique. I don't know how the Vietnamese take on your profile will work. Certainly you have solid stats, but I don't see the "hook".
I am not so impressed by your personal info page, i.e. ec's and such.
Your chances are: guarded. Not good, not critical, but guarded.
Just being honest.

Thanks for the honesty. I appreciate that. I'm really not expecting to get in, but I would love to attend Duke if I did happen to get in by a will of God.

when were you a congressional page? my sister was a page in the cloakroom..maybe you knew her

and I think you have a chance, but out of state is harder...i def think you have a shot, though

Sorry if I was too hard on you. I think you have a chance.

first generation, low-income, great SAT's and GPA, congressional page.

you are extremely strong.

powderpuff, you weren't too harsh. I appreciate your honest opinion because I rather prepare for the worst.

Thanks for your input guys. I know my SAT scores aren't that great, and of course my rank is not great either, and my AP scores are horrible, and ECs are so generic...lol I won't get in.

Oh gosh, now I want to cry :(
Hey you are Vietnamese, first generation for college. You do have a shot.
Keep us updated.

lol sorry for making you feel bad powderpuff.

Thanks for the encouragement though. :)

BTW, does being Vietnamese count as an ORM, since it is Asian? Will it hurt me much?

You definitely have a good chance of getting in.
SATs are a little low.
However, everything else seems to be working out for you.
Good luck!

Thanks, CoolaTropa.

ur roughly similar to me...

i remember reading some of your (princeton?) essays. I would give you chances, but I really have no idea what to expect for myself... other than i didn't recieve any of these "likely" letters. So I'll just say good luck :)

Yeah, I believe you did read my Princeton supplemental essay! I didn't submit that essay to Duke, since they only require one common app essay, but unfortunately I didn't do the Why Duke essay b/c I was too rushed (procastination :(). Well anyways, good luck to you too, zerocool920! Hope to see you at Duke!

Give it 23 days y'all :)

Only 22 more days!

^^ is duke officially releasing on the 29th then???

Dunno...I went to the online decisions page (<a href="https://www.admissions.duke.edu/jump/thed/thed-homepage.asp?%5B/url%5D">https://www.admissions.duke.edu/jump/thed/thed-homepage.asp?</a>) and it's asking me for my Access code which I definitely threw out weeks ago...haha.

Edit: I clicked around and was able to access my "Decision Letter" page (obviously no decision yet) but I did get this message without having to type in my access code:

"Regular Decision applicants, you will be able to view your admissions decision on-line at the end of March. Be sure to check back around mid-March; we will provide complete instructions at that time."

Here's the link:
<a href="https://www.admissions.duke.edu/status/decision_letter.asp%5B/url%5D">https://www.admissions.duke.edu/status/decision_letter.asp</a></p>

I wonder if it is going to be on the 29th...:(

I wouldn't mind too much if it came out after the 29th though, but most schools are releasing on that day (Ivies, UCs).
