On a scale of 1 - 10..

How hard is it to maintain a gpa of a 3.6 in a top 30 university in the US (majoring in Econ) ? Assuming that someone manages their time well, and is a relatively intelligent and well adjusted person. I'm trying to figure out if my parents are trying to scare me because they dislike my friday night party habits. I want to go to a top 5 business school too, so I pretty much NEED the 3.6+

It is pretty hard. You need to study a lot and avoid procrastinating. You'll need to cut down on those parties.

I dunno about that.

I know lots of people who party LOTS and do just fine in class. Really. LOTS.

Depends more on the person than anything else.

mightynick, im pretty sure it's possible to get good grades while still going to parties on friday nights. for goodness sakes, i doubt prism has an econ class saturday morning. if he is responsible for the rest of the week, then he deserves some time off friday night?

College isn't all about studying. Figure it out for yourself. You can maintain a 3.6+ while going out on friday nights. It only gets difficult when you start going out on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, etc.

You are going to college for a reason. Stop listening to your parents and have a good time. It will be over before you even know it.

Yea it would only be a Friday & Satuday night thing, I have self control so I wouldn't really do anything any other night.. Follow Up question:

If the average freshmen only has class 3-4 days a week, and even then much less actual learning time than the average high schooler, then why would college be harder than my senior year of HS which will involve me going to school 5x a week taking 6 AP courses which are basically college level classes.
Not to mention cramming a few clubs and volenteering in that.

the thing is, i can't do well academicaly if i party a lot too. I get distracted easily. In the end, I'd say it depends on what kind of person you are.

I think college seems harder because you're on your own and have to take care of yourself. My friend goes to UMich and he gets so much work...he barely has any free time on weekdays and weekends are quite busy too.

College has ALOT more outside work and studying than high school. AP classes probably prepared you pretty well though.

8...

My roomate last year had no social life and got 3.8 something while taking so many Econ courses. He was first year taking 300 level Econ courses! He was a whining about getting women at my frat's parties yet he never got one.

I guess high gpa doesnt help with women.

i'm at uva, got a 3.9 gpa first semester while partying a lot. but got a 3.0 the second semester b/c of pledging+more proscrastination.

It also depends on the school. "Top 30" doesn't say much about how difficult the grading is - the top schools vary widely.
