On Campus Apartment Living

My D is a rising junior. She and 3 of her friends would like to live in the "on campus" apartments at Elon. Can someone please share any experiences their students have had and answer a few questions. The girls are looking at the Crest, Oaks and Mill Point. What are their chances at Mill Point as rising Juniors? Crest looks most affordable b/c it only requires a 10 month lease; is it really a deal or is it "yucky"? I am looking for honest feedback on all aspects of apartment living.

Good topic! Crest looks a little far - about a mile from campus? My son, also a rising junior, also mentioned a townhouse community off campus that is right next to Daniely, so perhaps we can add that to the original question.

My son is a second year living in Crest right now - They are VERY nice, 4 singles each with their own bathroom - Large living room, full kitchen and very large pantry - Has a really nice gym/rec area just for the residents - Still considered on campus housing - Price is the lowest of all the apartment type housing options - Only negative is that it is a little far off campus - About a 3/4 mile walk up hill - My son has a car but the parking they give for Crest residents is in Daniely so it’s not too helpful - He ends up either walking, long boarding or taking the Bio-Bus -

2in2Mom, how does he feel about his college experience living that far away from campus? Does he feel like he’s less connected, or that it’s harder to get involved and be a part of things?

I don’t know what chance rising juniors with no seniors in their group would have at Mill Point. It’s possible they would get in - I don’t know. I understand that seniors who have not moved off-campus get priority at Mill Point. Mill Point is gorgeous, but it is not that close to the main campus and as of this fall the BioBus does not go there.

The Oaks are nice and very convenient.

Crest is pretty far away.

The townhouse community next to Daniely your son is referring to is probably Sheridan. It’s NOT owned by Elon, so it’s “off campus,” even though it’s closer than Daniely or Crest. It’s wedged between Daniely and the elementary school. My daughter has many friends who live there. She says the units are nice inside. They vary in the number of bedrooms/students although I think most have 3. Be aware that Sheridan is heavily Greek and a very “lively” complex. The large house near the entrance is subdivided into apartments, all of which are occupied by members of one of the frats (KA).

There are some other off-campus town house complexes in the area as well.

Also be aware that some of the off-campus houses and I think at least some of the Sheridan condos’ landlords require two-year leases.

Yes, it was Sheridan that he mentioned. Sounds like the Oaks might be the best choice, but hasn’t that complex had some serious issues lately? I recall reading about leaks and plumbing problems. I’m surprised the Biobus doesn’t go to Mill Point.

And another one. Hopefully these are isolated incidents that have been fixed.

My S lives in an apartment complex out past Crest (Campus Trace.) He was placed there (as university housing) after he requested a new room assignment in May. Idk if Elon will need to use this complex for overflow housing again next year or if all of these apartments will be considered off-campus. In any event, it has worked out just fine for him. The apartment is quite spacious; 3 bedrooms each with full size beds, their own full bath, and a large walk-in closet. Nice size LR and a decent kitchen with pantry closet. Laundry room too. It does not have a club house or common area. As for the distance, S has a car and he relies on that to get back and forth. He parks in the Colonnades lot on some mornings, and on the other days he actually parks on the street just off campus. We were worried that he would be somewhat unconnected from campus, but that hasn’t been the case at all. If your kid is involved in various activities, they will be out and about. Biscuitville also gets him into Moseley quite regularly! Not sure yet what he is hoping to do next year; he would like to be in walking distance of campus, but if he ends up staying at Trace that will be fine too. He is very glad that he got out of his 8-person Daniely suite and is in a larger space with more room to himself and a much better atmosphere for studying. One word of warning - if your child lives beyond walking distance and has a car, then make sure they are very, very sure of how they will handle getting home if they have been out partying. We hammered home the drinking and driving issue with our S before letting him take the car. Unfortunately one of his apartment mates was not as concerned and careful about this issue. Suffice it to say that S’s apartment now has an empty bedroom.

Wow, I had no idea that overflow housing that far from campus was in use. Glad it is working for your son. I would think that with the additional new dorms opening fall 2014 there would be sufficient on campus housing for those who want it. At least I hope so!

RVM, I have no idea how many of these apartments are occupied as university housing. S was placed there after requesting a rooming switch for a very specific reason. I wasn’t thrilled with the placement, but we were all relieved that he was out of a situation that he didn’t think would be good for him, and he was thrilled to be in an apt. instead of a dorm (He loves having the use of a kitchen.) The lower cost of housing was appreciated as well. We were very surprised when we arrived in August to see how nice and big the apartment was. As I said, it has worked out just fine, and I’m really glad we didn’t make a stink about the distance (although he wouldn’t be as happy if he didn’t have a car to go back and forth.)

2in2Mom, it is looking like the girls are leaning toward Crest. All of them have cars, but has your son tried the Bio Bus? Can you please tell me what size the beds are–full or twin? How well is the carpeting and interior maintained? Girls are coming out of two years in Colonades so expectations of Elon housing are “high” for them. Am concerned about walking from parties, etc. late at night but trying to let girls make their own choice.

I’m on college tours with D2 so I apologize if there are typos since I’m on my phone. Yes, even though he has a car he does rely on the bio-bus. They can look up when it is on it’s route so they can plan their time better. He said he would have rather been in the Oaks but he couldn’t get in. Personally I am fine with paying a lot less for Crest. It is a very short walk to Daniely so it’s really not that far. He does walk home from parties but he walks through campus not on the outskirts. As far as the apartments you can look at pictures online and see the apartment layout. I doubt it’s as nice as Colonnades but they each have their own room and full bathroom so you can’t really beat that.

I am on college tours in upstate NY this weekend with d2 and the rest of NJ!! What do you do when nothing compares to Elon, but d2 wants nothing to do with Elon? Having a hard time keeping my mouth shut!

In the same boat. S1 at Elon could have gone anywhere for his major and picked Elon. It was the perfect choice for him and he is thriving there. As parents, we believe nothing compares! With D2 we are looking at the schools that have the program she is interested in. Surprisingly, all the schools are public. A totally different feeling but some that are great fits for her. It took me a while but I think I have finally stopped comparing everything to Elon. Probably because nothing can compare…
