On campus audition vs. unifieds? & cincinnatus?

I’ve read through several of these threads and looked on CCM’s website, but didn’t see this addressed.

Is it basically the same experience to audition at Unifieds vs on campus? I did see that at Unifieds you have to bring recorded accompaniment. Is there any benefit to doing one over the other (besides the obvious of saving money at unifieds)

I know that some schools with on campus auditions have sessions with faculty, tours with current students, etc. Does CCM do this?

My D is a rising senior and this summer we are putting together her list and trying to fit in auditions among her school commitments, and keeping a reasonable budget in mind. However, if there is more benefit to going in person, then we will.

Also, my D has very good stats (UW GPA 4.0, ACT 35, 3APs this year, 4-5 next year, Good ECs & community service). Anyone familiar with Cincinnatus process? Just wondering if we could combine an audition trip with a Cincinatus interview trip. I know they are handled by two separate departments, but trying to look at big picture and possibly save $$.

Thanks!

My data is a couple of years old…but in the on-campus CCM audition, they did have live accompaniment, a full dance call (don’t know what they do for dance at Unifieds). There was a Q&A session at the start of the day, and a short performance from current students.

As for Cincinnatus, my d’s year the on-campus weekend didn’t match any of the in-city audition dates. Not sure if that’s changed. However, if your d is selected to compete (and her stats look good) she does have to come to campus to do so. It would be a busy (but hopefully possible) weekend to do both. I know d did the Elon Fellows competition (similar) and on-campus MT audition the same (looooong) day.

Good luck with your list! If she is interested in other schools, as their dates come up, Cincinnati is 2 hours from Columbus (Otterbein), 4 from Cleveland (Baldwin-Wallace), 5 from Ann Arbor (UMich), 4 from Ada (Ohio Northern) 2 1/2 from Muncie, In (Ball State) 3 from Bloomington (IU)…and it is possible to do a couple in a weekend, if the drive works.

Hi Mom2them, My son just graduated from CCM MT program in 2011. He also competed and won one of the prestigious full ride cincinnatus scholarships. It was an incredible experience for him from beginning to end. After graduation he moved to NYC and has been working there for the past year. He will be going to London in the fall as he was accepted into a world renown MA Drama program and will study for the year in London,Russia, and Greece. He would never have had any of these opportunities if it had not been for the training and caring teachers at CCM. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this program. Good luck to your daughter and if you can swing it compete for that scholarship! The money my son was able to save due to the scholarship provided him a cushion for living expenses for the first couple of months in the city.

I can’t speak to the Cincinnatus situation but my D did audition at L.A. Unifieds and there was a full dance call. It was one of her best and most enjoyable auditions. She was put on hold, but ultimately rejected, although there were others from the same audition who were accepted, so I know there was not an advantage to auditioning on campus when it came to final results.

Which environment is better depends on your D’s temperament. Mine found that the long days of on campus tours and information sessions along with the audition tended to suck her energy and distract her, and she didn’t do as well in those auditions. At Unifieds, she seemed to feed off the energy of going from audition to audition and all the kids’ excitement and she did much better (both in her acceptances and just in how she felt about her performance).

Others might feel that the pressure of going from one audition to the next isn’t conducive to giving their best audition.

Of course, she might not know which category she will fall into until she’s in the situation, so this might not be very helpful! We were both surprised by her reaction to Unifieds.

The Cincinnatus scholarship competition is definitely worth pursuing (note that the application deadline is early, I think 12/1?). Back in 2011 when my S applied, they didn’t coordinate their on-campus audition dates with the scholarship competition dates (maybe this has changed?), so if your daughter wants to audition on-campus as well as compete for the Cincinnatus, it may require 2 trips. Also, unless your D auditions early in the season and is accepted into the MT program early (this doesn’t happen too often at CCM), she will be required to attend the Cincinnatus competition on campus without knowing whether she’s accepted artistically or not.
