On campus general healthcare?

Hey, so I'm wondering if Cornell has their own student insurance that you can purchase..? If for instance, you don't want to piggy back upon your parents' policy? If you need to see a doctor, or a dentist, etc. are there any around the area? or could you visit an on campus center..?

Also, how much does a gym membership cost? and, if I decide to a bike to get from class to class, is there a special registration process? o-O

Please and thank you, in advance.

Student Health Insurance: [Welcome to the Cornell University Student Health Insurance Office](<a href=“Welcome | Student Health Benefits”>http://www.studentinsurance.cornell.edu/)

If you bring your bike, you do need to register it ([Register Your Bike](http://www.transportation.cornell.edu/tms/cms/parking/commuting/cyclists/register.cfm)) and place a sticker on it (not that anyone ever checks). Most dorms (if not all) have bike rooms where you can store your bike, and there are lots of bike racks all over campus. I’ve used my bike occasionally, but I usually walk or take the bus (free for freshmen).

Thanks! and, wow. SHIP sounds really good and a lot less expensive than a normal policy. Are the expenses for it charged to your bursar bill?

Do you have to pay to use the on-campus gym…? Is it safe to ride the bike during the winter? (I have no prior experience with a real winter…)

Yes, you do have to pay for an on-campus gym membership, unless of course you are an athlete. It is 90 dollars for 1 semester and 145 for year-round (this includes summer if you happen to stay)

Hmm, is the gym open 24 hours?

no it closes at midnight.

The site says 1600 dollars per person. Isn’t that a bit pricey? However, I dont know much about this myself because I am currently living aborad. Thanks.

Actually, I thought that was a lot cheaper than independently getting insurance under the age of 27 from any other accredited company o_O

if your parents have health insurance, you should still be able to be covered under their plan, if you’re under the age of 23. check the gannett website for a list of insurances that gannett pharmacy accepts.

also, don’t worry if gannett doesn’t accept your insurance - there’s a CVS, Target, Walmart, etc. all around Ithaca with their own pharmacy in them that will accept your insurance company. Target is usually the closest for people living on north campus, given that there’s a bus that goes straight to the mall and stops outside Target. i got all of my prescriptions there last year. luckily this year, my mom’s company switched insurance companies and the new one’s accepted at gannett.

If you take a PE course that meets in the gym (ie aerobics, etc.), you won’t have to pay a membership fee for that semester.

and two PE courses are required, right? In addition to the swim test?

^ Yep.

10chars

So, theoretically, I can get a free membership my freshman year? lol I’m gonna come home so fit!

yeah but you have to pay for the gym class…like an extra fee, which coincidentally is the same amount as that of a gym membership.

thing to keep in mind for the next four years: cornell will take every penny they can take.

T_T should I add an arm and a leg to those expenses?
