On Campus Housing for Upperclassman Transfers

I am transferring to JMU from a community college and will be starting my Junior year this fall and will be living on campus. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on which upperclassman dorms were better than others. I am going to be spending the majority of my classtime at the ISAT building so I am looking at Skyline, but am wondering if the quad style dorms closer to other parts of campus would be a better in some way. Any advice would help!

I’m on the same boat as you  people have told me that east side of campus is better I guess since it’s closer to d-hub, urec, and other cool stuff. I guess west campus has less cool stuff idk. That’s all I know so far sorry haha

That makes three of us haha, I’m trying to decide between on campus housing but I don’t really know much about it. I also kinda wanna look at off campus housing. But yeah I’ve heard that east side is better too.

Yea the only reason I don’t want to live off campus is because I really don’t know the campus at all

It’s good to know that I’m not alone lol. I know I want to live on campus so that I can meet new people and get involved. Like I said I’m going to be spending most of my class time at the ISAT building, so East campus would be nice, but that would be a traditional dorm style, which I kinda don’t want to do. I hear that Converse, which is near the center of campus is nice and offers quad style living, but I don’t want a long hike to my classes. Ugh it is so hard…

Yea I mean I figure I’ll be taking the bus around the campus most of the time anyway so I’m trying to live in grace st on campus apartments. But I feel like thats a competitive choice. To be honest tho I feel like wherever we live it will be awesome!

Yes it will be awesome! I am so excited!

Are transfer students offered housing? If so, I imagine it is like freshman housing in such that you list out your order of preference and then are assigned to a dorm randomly which could be your first or even your last choice. So, put Skyline as your 1st choice since it is near ISAT and then whatever else you like. Welcome to JMU

@bboop42 yes it is set up in preferences of what you like most and it is also random. And I am also a transfer student that needs some help with choosing housing. Should I live on or off campus? I don’t want to be in a dorm. I also don’t want to deal with RA’s either. If there are any on campus housing places that aren’t dorms and don’t have RA’s that would be awesome but I don’t know if JMU has that.

im also going to be a junior if that helps

@JMU2018baby if you don’t want an RA or to live in a dorm then definitely live off campus. I’m pretty sure you’ll have an RA at pretty much every on-campus housing location, however, a lot of the housing choices for transfers are quad style and not traditional dorm style, except for the dorms on Skyline. But yeah if I were you I would hold off on signing the on-campus contract and would see what off campus options are available first.

@jmu2018baby JMU does not have any campus housing, including the Grace Street Apts, that does not have RAs. IIf you join the Class of 2018 Facebook page, there are quite a few upcoming Juniors looking for roommates in apartments which might work out well for you. Congrats on becoming a Duke and best of luck.
