on campus housing question

Any suggestions on securing on-campus housing as a freshman ?
If a prospective freshman cannot place a dorm deposit until fully accepted into FSU and most freshman are accepted at the same time, will all the available freshman housing disappear the moment acceptances are displayed ?

There are two decision dates. Everyone who is accepted in Dec will get housing if the go on the website and register by paying a deposit for housing. Even if you wait until JUST BEFORE the second notification in March, you will get housing. In March, on the second notification day, you need to get online and get a priority number ASAP. Most will check to see if they can sign onto the housing portal BEFORE they check their decision. Because if you can sign into housing, and get a number, then you know you are in. In the last year, you could start signing on in the few hours before midnight and sometimes secure housing.

If you decide to wait until all your acceptances come in – especially those from private U’s and LAC’s that do not notify until April–before you pay for a housing deposit, you could be out of luck. The housing deposit is refundable except for $50 if you notify FSU housing by May 1, so you have little to loose.

The biggest thing is your priority number. When you find out you are accepted to FSU, apply for housing. The earlier you do this, the better your priority number, and the greater your odds are at getting a dorm that you want.

When we were going through this, a friend of mine applied for housing within only a couple minutes of the application going live- and had a housing priority of 6. Another friend of mine applied and had one around 380, and I applied the afternoon of the first day it was open (about 17 hours after it opened) and got a priority number of 518. I’ve always gotten my first choice for housing with my number, as have both of my friends.

Thanks–
For clarity, If I am lucky to get accepted on December 14 @midnight and at that moment use my parents credit card and put in a housing deposit, then I will be assured both on campus housing and probably my first choice.

pretty much–though my son got his second choice. his first was Gilcrist but much of that is used for honors–so he got a dorm nearby that was his second choice

I thanks everyone for their responses and if possible, could you guys please tell me which dorms you would suggest for a freshman and more importantly which dorms you would avoid. Thanks again –

It’s hard to say what is “best”. My son had Broward–one of the renovated dorms and it wasn’t very social. His roommate wasn’t very friendly. He had to buy a meal plan which was expensive and he hated the food. If he had to chose again, I think he would have chosen Deviney or Wildwood. He had a friend who lived in the less desirable “Deviney” community style dorm who loved it. The location’s not bad and no meal plan is required. Wildwood would give you a newer suite style dorm that does not require a meal plan.
