Hopefully this thread will answer questions about the housing timeline.
Timeline for Housing:
1. Apply for Admission to UT.
2. Apply for housing. ($50) Date you pay is what sets your room assignment priority.
3. Pay your enrollment deposit after you are admitted. ($200)
4. Housing will offer you a housing contract and notify you via email. Accept it on line or if you are under 18 print, sign and mail it.
5. Pay the Advance Payment for housing. ($300)
6. Make your building choices and choose your roommate on line.
7. Send questions to housing@austin.utexas.edu

There are ways to have your admission application fee waived, which in turn, will waive your housing application fee.

Thanks, UTHousing, this is very helpful. I had a couple of other questions I hope you don't mind answering.

If you do all of those steps you outlined, but end up deciding in the spring not to go to UT, what part, if any, of the $500 is refundable?

If you've done steps 1-3 pretty early on (in October or so), should you still hurry and do steps 4-6 to try to get your preferred dorm or can you wait awhile since you paid the $50 (room assignment priority) fairly early?

Since your room assignment priority is based on when you paid your $50 housing application fee, you may take your time making your building and roommate choices. You must still pay the $300 Advance Payment and accept the terms and conditions of your housing contract before the expiration date on the contract.

The Advance Payment of $300 is refundable before May 1 should you decide not to attend UT.

My accepted OOS son (from a few days ago) just sent in the $50. We did not read the fine print about sending this part in before acceptance. A few questions:

Are dorms already filled? When we pick preferences, will it indicate which are still available?

Is the # in line from this year’s $50 payment constant for their place in line for future years?

We are trying to set up a campus visit for the next few weeks once I can call his CNS department tomorrow to check availability. We would rather visit the campus before selecting dorm preferences; is that risky?

I’m not sure of this but a quick call to DHFS (Division of Housing and Food Services) should get you that answer.

2) When we pick preferences, will it indicate which are still available?

No. The website for ordering your 5 preferred dorms is up and is left there until July 1st. This allows those who are still making college decisions that late to reserve their spot in line. Afterwards, the website is taken down and students are then given their rooms based on when they put down their deposit and which dorms remain unfilled. So unfortunately, there is no way to tell which dorms your son will have the best shot at. However, Duren and San Jacinto, the two most popular dorms, are most likely lost causes so I don’t think he should bother wasting 2 spots on his list with them.

3) Is the # in line from this year’s $50 payment constant for their place in line for future years?

Yes. But a vast majority of students move off campus after their first year. And considering that freshmen are able to get spaces in all dorms, a sophomore should not have much of a problem.

4) We are trying to set up a campus visit for the next few weeks once I can call his CNS department tomorrow to check availability. We would rather visit the campus before selecting dorm preferences; is that risky?

As I said above, dorms preferences are not due until July 1st and it makes no difference when you enter them, so long as it’s before the due date.

Have fun on campus! I’m sure you’ll love it. The weather is beautiful right now :)

So I applied for housing ($50) late but my future roommate paid hers back in October. Will we be able to go off of her dorm priority since she paid early since we will be matched up?

Does the time you pay the enrollment deposit have any bearing on housing? The reason I ask is we are waiting to see what our son’s financial aid package may be before we acknowledge his acceptance letter (this course of action was recommended by his HS counselor). We have not sent in the $50 yet because of that reason as well. He stayed in Jester this summer at the Honor’s Colloquium and was not that impressed (quite hot and the elevators had problems). We have been here all weekend for the Explore UT and have looked around while we were here. We assume if we send in the $50 at this point it will be Jester or nothing, so we also looked at the Castillian and Dobie as alternatives.
