On-Campus Housing?

Hi, im an OOS NY'er who wanted to get into surfing. Which residence hall would be the closest to the beach? How close are most of them to the beach...within walking distance?
Also, im not a huge partier so which residence hall might be the least party-oriented. I dont consider myself much of a misanthrope, but my idea of a good time isnt getting wasted 24/7. So i would prefer a dorm that is social but not to a fault, if that is possible.

All dorms except Francisco Torres are by the beach. I'm in Manzanita Village and I have a single room. Here are some pics of my room and MV.

Are you a freshman? Because id like to for at least my freshman year have the roomate experience.

Also, on the UC main website it says on campus housing is only gaurenteed for one year, but is it easy to get it for at least two through University Apartments or whatnot, without leaving the campus area for IV. Also, i heard Manz. village is pretty hard to get into Freshman Year. Could anyone recommend another residence hall which isnt as raucous as FT, but is still nice.

I'm a senior. While the university only guarantees housing for 1 year you won't have a problem if you decide to stay in a dorm for 4 years. Most students move to IV by their sophomore or junior year. It's actually easier to get MV slot on your Sophomore year. About 250 slots are offered to freshmen in MV. After that it's first-come-first-serve if the computer server won't crash...This year it became a lottery because of some server problems.

Just wait till you get your dorm assignment. They won't put you in a single room unless you request it. I highly suggest Anacapa and Santa Rosa. San Miguel and San Nicholas are way too big (8floors). All of them are a minute walk to the beach.

hey ucsbstud, u drink a lot right?I saw a corona box under your bed

If I don't like to party a lot, which one should i choose...

ok, well i am going to ucsb TO have a good time, but still take school seriously. i want to party, but i dont necessarily want one in my hall every night. where would you suggest?

NO, I don't drink a lot. But Thursday nite is sorta "College Nite" here so I buy corona and rum in case my friends drop by and chill in my room. It's all about moderation. VERY FEW students party during midterms week and finals week.

If you're expecting parties every night you'll be disappointed. Fun times only take place Thursday to Saturday nights and mostly in Isla Vista. You could get in trouble if you serve alcohol to someone who's under 21 so it's normally on closed doors if students do this in the dorm. But if you're looking to really party it all up and get wasted, IV is there for you Thurs-Sat.

So, can anyone give me a description of all on campus housing halls? Thanks

know anything about Francisco Torres ? i heard it was the best place for parties. any pics? can freshmen get a room in there?

FT houses about one-third of the freshmen.

hey. i just got back from visiting ucsb today, and i looked at all the dorming situations. just like you guys, i'm not one to party every night, but definately will in moderation. To me, it seemed as tho santa cruz, anacapa, and santa rosa would have the most partying. since they are all only two stories, it seemd that everybody knew eachother in the hall really well, and when it was time to have a party, all doors were open. this is just my opinion tho. I also have a few friends to who go there and told me this same thing. so for me, i'm applying for San Nicolas. it's newer, it's nice, and personally i want to be in a tower (overlooking the beach). Another thing you might want to consider is that san miguel is same sex each floor. san nicolas, were i want to live, is constructed in an L-shape, and each leg of the L is single sex; so although your individual hall is all male, all you have to do is turn the corner and it's a whole hall of all females. i liked that better than every other floor.

is FT a really bad place to be on rainy days?

yea... everybody i talked to says the 6 minutes bike ride on normal days is totally worth the extra room and how much nicer the FT towers are. They only said it sucks on rainy days, but i assume you'd just take the bus if were raining. free bus for all ucsb students right from FT to campus.

Nearly all dorms are co-ed floors. However, San Nic does have an all girls floor, that floor being the 8th. Typically freshmen dorms will be loud no matter where you stay -- they have a lot of free time on their hands during the first quarter (since many take 12 units), typically introductory classes are easy, and it's the first time being away from the parents.

how far is ucsb from state street

Roughly 10-15 minutes away by the 24x bus. Don't take the number 11, you'll be on there for nearly an hour since it goes local.

damn, tthats far,do students normally take it?
