Freshman housing is luck of the draw unless there’s a ‘hook’ such as Honors College or an LLC that helps pull one to a specific location of interest. My student is in Hutton Honors College but can’t remember for the life of me where their assigned part of the world is. It all depends on budget too. As a parent I have experienced the following:
Collins - lower cost, interesting food choices, best location ever on campus IMHO esp Kelley
Ashton - single rooms, older, all the charm of a gulag, lower cost - single rooms rock!
Forest - best food on campus, end of discussion. Great services, good atmosphere
Union Street Center tree dorms - expensive, but state of the art, good socializing
Wilkie - my favorite :). Forest food, rooms seemed nicer than Forest (IMHO).
I know it’s possible to score a McNutt / Briscoe room as a freshman, and the place is nice and convenient for Kelley. Office mate’s kid is there, it’s a bit ‘lively’.
I have eaten at a lot of places (Wright, Read, Forest, Library, Collins, Union Street Complex) and Forest is pretty good and lots of choices. The library cafe has some interesting ones too.
For eating out, what can I say. Very good options.
My D is in the Southeast Neighborhood but she’s an Ed major so loves the location. Not really the best option if you are in Kelley, however, she seems to get around just fine either walking or using the bus system to get around campus and even off campus. She doesn’t have a car at school and gets by just fine. She has friends in Kelley who are in Central Neighborhood and they seem to like it.
As for food, she has tried most of the dinning halls but Forest is her default since its is right next to her dorm. She does like the newest one that opened up in Wells. She does eat off campus from time to time and there are plenty of places to go. Most of her meals are on campus. I’m actually surprised she hasn’t gone off campus more, especially to Mother Bears for pizza.
She did apply for dorm early and is in an LLC so that helped her get the dorm she wanted. She found her roommate using the schools app. Seems like that’s how most of her friends found their roommates.
There is not a single Honors dorm. There are Hutton Honors floors in each of the housing neighborhoods. My now graduated children both selected the Honors floors in Teter (Central Neighborhood) for the convenient location. There were certainly Business majors on their floors as it’s quite close to Kelley. Their floor mates included many different majors including Music, Biochemistry, Computer Science, Education, Journalism, etc.
