Where does Wake hold its on campus interviews? Admissions office? All of the schools my son has applied to do not do interviews so this will be his first. For those of you who have been through the interview process at Wake any suggestions or comments would be appreciated. One more thing, for those of you who have interviewed, what did you wear (male applicants). I have suggested to my son khaki pants, shirt and tie although I am unsure about a navy blazer. What do you think? Thanks for any responses.

Yes, interviews are in the admissions building.

My D interviewed in November. She actually wore jeans, if I remember. I don't remember seeing any of the boys in ties, let alone ties and coats. I'd think slacks and shirt are more than adequate.

My son interviewed over the summer so the weather was hot. He wore khaki pants and a polo shirt, I believe. We saw a range of dress. There were a few in polos/button downs, one or two with shirt and tie, and one with blazer. Now, it was summer, but the guy in the blazer looked a tad formal and overdressed. I think you son should obviously focus on presenting himself well, but also be comfortable and be himself. My son has had to wear ties a lot so is fairly comfortable in one - others might not be.

Also, I thought on-campus interviews needed to by complete by mid-December. Have they extended the interview process?

Good luck. I hope this helps.

^ you're right there is NO MORE ON CAMPUS INTERVIEWS , you have to do this written interview , you got 10 days for it to be completed. This is online, 5 questions, 6 min each. Let me tell you first hand, it wasn't fun at all, but good luck, i should've done the on-campus interview it would've been much much simpler to speak my thoughts.

They are actually still doing on-campus interviews and I know this cause I have one on monday. Yikes! So i'd appreciate any advice from anyone who's already done one.

Coat and tie is really unnesessary, unless coming directly from a job or something that requires he wear a tie. Business casual is fine -- khakis, and open collar shirt.

rschlegel420 i wish i can give you advise, but right now i'm kind of angry not at you but the admissions, they freaking told me NO More on-campus interview- i called on dec. 17 i think, i live in Winston-Salem, so it is just 10 min away, so it is not a big deal for me to go. Can you tell me when you called them, who you talked you etc, I'm going to call them back tomorrow and demand a interview.

Thank you all for your advice, I am so glad that I posted this as I think my son may have been a tad overdressed. We live in the Northeast where things tend to be a bit more formal so that is why I was so unsure of what would be appropriate for North Carolina. sblogblah, my son received an email on 12/19 telling him that they had received his application and they had noticed that he had not conducted an admissions interview. The email states that a face to face is the most helpful and that they were conducting interviews from 12/29-1/30 on Monday and Fridays only at 9,10,11am and 2,3,4pm. He called immediately to set something up and they had only a few times left. Perhaps because you live in Winston-Salem, this was not an option for you. I am sure that they want to see the interest level from out of staters and this is a great way to tell. But I really have no idea. Hopefully if you call admissions they can accomodate you. Good luck and thank you all for your "fashion advice"

yeah its casual. at mine i wore just khakis and a polo- saw no one really dressed up

Thanks for the info. We had called and were told no interviews after Christmas, but I guess the demand was very high. I'll have my son call and see if there are any spots left.

sblogblah, i also got the email that said they had recieved my application and that I should do an interview. My choices were onine, skype or on-campus. They said on-campus was most helpful, and despite living three states away I decided to make the trip. They did say that spots for interviews were very limited and that was about two weeks ago so I wouldn't get my hopes up....

Thanks guys for your help, looks like i somehow received a DIFFERENT email than all you, i'm in-state maybe that's why my my options was only virtual "written". I called admissions today that they said no spots left, my luck. GOOD LUCK TO THE PEOPLE WHO HAVEN'T INTERVIEWED.

Yeah, no spots are left, only written interviews. Wish we'd known that they were extending the interviews into January. I guess it depended on whether you applied earlier or not.

Mom: No college would require nor expect a coat and tie for an undergraduate admissions interview.

I beg to differ with you on that one. I have toured many colleges with my son and have seen several kids in sport coats in the info session, tour etc. In fact when we were visiting BC in the summer there was a kid in a suit which I found odd since BC doesn't give interviews. I assumed he was doing the Harvard, Tufts, BC run. I see you are from So.Cal (I lived in Pasadena for a few years) and while I agree out there it would be strange to see sportcoats, here in the Northeast (CT, Mass) it would not be unusual at all.

I didn't say is would be "unusual" -- I did post that it would not be "expected." There are many alumni interviewers on cc, including those for schools in your neck of the woods (CT, Mass)...they have always suggested casual dress for applicants.

Yeah, I toured the east coast colleges several times and only saw one boy in a sport coat and tie; it was his blue prep school jacket, complete with huge crest. The kid looked around the room at the others waiting to interview -- all of which were dressed casually -- and just looked out of place; perhaps he was just a geeky type, but he also looked mighty uncomfortable (which is the key for a good interview -- be comfortable).

Sblogblah,
You should know that the Wake interview is not a light chat. The admissions officers take the interview very seriously and your son will be asked some serious, thought-provoking questions. Good luck!

Good luck!

So, are the interview questions top secret? Can anyone tell us the kinds of things they ask? Not verbatim, but at least subject areas?

D interviewed in November. I honestly don't remember a single specific question (I think there was one about current events?) that she reported, but she did say it was a challenging interview; she had to think quickly. Seems to me, the questions reflected the more thoughtful short answer questions on the Wake application, i.e., those more like,"Take a position and then disagree with it" than "Define cool."
