on campus jobs?

anyone here have experience with working on campus at Umichigan? i am interested in applying for and on-campus jobs for <15 hours a week. i will be an entering junior transfer student at Mich for Winter term and i am just wondering if it will interfere with the course work load?

I wouldn’t recommend a dining hall job.
Better to do a desk job where you can do homework.

yeah i am not going to even apply to a dining hall job.

Try to become a paid research assistant for a professor.

Benefits

-You get money
-You may get to work on a cool project
-It may help with your classes

@777, does the actual professor pay you? Also, how might one inquire of a research assistant position for a professor that has not listed a job opening.

I am not certain. I was in UROP and Research Scholars my first two years and did it for work study (which is how I was paid).

It seems like professors are more willing to give research assistants credit rather than money. I believe the money for research assistants does come from the professor’s funding unless the research assistants are in a program like UROP.

The best way to find out about research positions is to ask professors in your department, especially ones that know you. Even if they are not looking for someone, they might be able to connect you to another professor who is.

It’s hard to get paid for research work unless you do UROP under work study since the professor would need to pay you directly out of his or her pocket.

As you will be new to the University of Michigan, it is hard to get jobs other than at the dining hall or front desk, etc. But for next year you could apply to be an RA/CA or you could be a instructional assistant for a class.

UROP has a transfer student section, definitely do that if you want something that looks good on the resume too
