On campus jobs

How do their hourly schedules work? Like can you work for 2-3 hours a day or do they want people who will work 8 hour shifts?

While it can depend on the job, for the vast majority it’s more like 2-4 hour shifts. This is because they know you’re a student and have classes, so 8 hour shifts are unlikely and it’s convenient for you to work in between classes. The kind of jobs you get on campus lend themselves to shorter shifts anyways (you’re not supervising anything). My job lets me set my own 10 hours, within the 9-5 work week of my boss. I think I’ll be doing two 1-hour shifts and four 2-hour shifts.

Because I get out of class at 9:50 on MW and would love to work from 11-3 each day…it would give me some money and be convenient…and on Tuesday and Thursday I go not start class until 11…

My job at the rec center has these shifts during the year for most of the employees, new students have slightly different hours.

M-R: 5:45-9am, 9-11, 11-2, 2-5, 5-9, 6-10, 9-12:15am
F: 5:45-9am, 9-11, 11-2, 2-4, 4-7, 7-10:15pm
Sa: 7:45-noon, noon-3, 3-6, 6-10:15pm
Su: 8:45-noon, noon-3, 3-6, 6-9, 9-12:15am

I prefer to bunch all my classes together and work the night shifts, but other employees like to work the day shift between classes if they can. And shifts can be changed if needed, for example: a girl last semester worked 11-1 instead of 11-2 and the next girl work 1-5 instead of 2-5. On campus jobs tend to be VERY flexible when it comes to your work schedule. Off campus jobs seem to think of you as employee first, student second. My on campus boss loves to remind us that we’re here to get an education, NOT to work at the rec center and he’ll work with us if we have class conflicts.

Is the pay for oncampus jobs around same as an off campus job or is it ususally less? I am an incoming freshman and plan to get one. What kind of jobs do you usually get? Any suggestions?

Search your school website. They will probably list some.
Or if your interested in a particular department, or your school has a carer services center, contact them.

I go to a huge huge university, so the on-campus jobs vary WIDELY! I have a job next semester where I’ll be whats called a supplemental instructor for a psych class (like being a TA, but I get paid). It’s 10 hours a week, 3 in the class itself, 3 hours of office hours, the rest is prep time and meetings. I’m also helping welcome new freshmen into the dorms as a welcome leader coordinator. I’ll most likely apply to be an orientation leader in the spring.

My sister worked on-campus during her whole four years. She worked at the school paper in the marketing department, and the community outreach program.
You can work in libraries, at food vendors, the student union, departments throughout campus (office jobs), bookstore, orientation leader, student aids (grading, general errands), tutoring, computer help/help desks, IT, sports programs/rec center, and a lot more. My school has a website where on-campus departments post job listings, and you apply from there.

The pay is most likely the same, maybe less for on-campus, but youre going to get amazing leniency from your employer on campus.

On campus typically pays less than your regular job, but I think the slight pay cut is worth the large amount of leniency. Most managers at a place really don’t give a crap whether or not you have an exam coming up.. but the ones working at the university will care a lot more and will tend to be much more understanding. There aren’t many places who are going to be willing to hire someone working 10-15 hours a week lol.

Are we allowed to work off campus as some part time jobs??

Yes…off campus jobs are allowed, except I think at places like Bob Jones (seriously). Some of my friends work at the mall or a car part store or restaurants. On campus jobs just tend to be more convenient and your boss will probably work with you if you have an exam coming up and it’ll probably be easier to get subs too.
