Hi everyone.
I've just been admitted to UB this summer semester. Can anyone tell me more about the on-campus jobs? Can freshmen apply for those jobs? And moreover, is there any way to reduce the costs for international student?
Thank you very much.

My daughter, currently a sophomore, found an on-campus job her very first week on campus freshman year. Her roommate this year got her on-campus job with ease as well. I have the impression that campus jobs are plentiful. Good luck to you.

You need to check your visa restrictions to determine whether you’re eligible to work as an international student. Many of the on-campus jobs (offices, labs, etc.) require federal work-study awards, which you will not receive as you can’t file FAFSA, but if your visa status permits you to work then you may be able to find a job with one of the numerous private companies doing business on campus. Check with the International Student Services office, they can advise you and help with getting work authorizations, etc.:

Thank you very much. Very helpful information.

Glad ska8rmom responded to the international issue, I did not think of that potential complication. But to clarify further – I do believe there are lots on non work-study jobs on campus. My D’s job is plain vanilla, not related in any way to work-study or FAFSA.

Yes, sorry, didn’t mean to imply that all UB jobs are work study. O-mom is right and it’s possible to find university jobs that are funded separately and they won’t have the maximum earning restrictions that federal work study has. There are many job postings listed on BullsEye and they clearly state whether or not work study is involved. But definitely start with determining what you need to do to be able to work on campus though as those pesky visas can require extra authorizations!
