On Deferrals -

I was deferred from MIT, so I was wondering if there's anything I can do.

The "Acing the College Application" book suggests calling the admissions office to ask about your application, and have your counselor do the same. This, the book argues, ensures that the institution has not missed any material while finding more reason behind your deferral. Do you guys think that this advice is sound, and will actually help your chances? I know that MIT shows you a record of what it has received, but I had sent an extra recommendation (from a summer program) that I'm not sure if they received or not.

Should I take up this advice?
Thanks!

P.S. - if someone else from my school received admission to MIT, does that severely reduce my chances? (I'm sorry if this belongs in a different forum)

Hey, I’m in the same boat as you, and I wouldn’t follow that advice. That book was published quite a few years ago when these electronic resources were not available. I wouldn’t call just to find out about the supplemental rec.

As for your second question, the answer is no.

If your counselor is happy to inquire about your deferral, I don’t think admissions would hold it against you. However, they may not offer any comments to the GC until RD is over.

MIT took three students from one class here, one year. Unusual, but , all were highly qualified. So there is hope! Good luck.
