I am a Junior in High School and I am thinking of taking on-line Trignometry thru BYU in Summer. The reason being that I am currently on Algebra 2 and may not have time to finish Pre-Calc in Senior year. Also my school does not let me advance, so thats another problem. I don’t want to be stuck in a year long Trignometry course in Senior year. Can Anyone please advise me what to do ? Is BYU Trignometry recognised by Colleges? My plan is to finish Trignometry over the summer and take Pre-Calc on-line for my Senior year. In college, I intend taking a STEM major but not Engineering or Computer science.
I’d advise any student to try to challenge themselves and get ahead of their coursework. If you NEED TO finish pre calc before going to college, then yes go for it.
And, depending on which college, I don’t know if BYU trig is recognized by colleges.
I may be misunderstanding, but it sounds like you are wanting to do both precalc and trig? This may be different at your high school, but at mine, Trig and Precalc are very similar courses and so typically students take one or the other (in fact, I think we aren’t even given the option to do both, only one or the other)
If it’s the same for your school, I’d consider choosing between the two for the summer, and if you want to do 2 math classes, picking up a different course such as stats or calc afterwards.
There are tons of great math programs you can use. Will your school allow you to simply test out or do you need to take a course for credit? If you can just test out after self studying, the Thinkwell series is excellent-Ed Burger is excellent and there are samples on line. There are also free programs available. But you’d first need to check to see if your school would be ok with them. https://www.thinkwell.com/products/precalculus
My school does not recognize outside/external courses. Hence I will not be able to get ahead. So my plan was to finish trig over summer-2019 and do Pre-Cal when school starts, Fall2019. But if the the two are similar then i might finish trig in school. The rest of my Gr 12 subjects are going to be English,/Econ-gov, Physics, Elective, and Trig.
I am thinking of doing Trig on-line since it is a waste to do it full year. Also as I am wondering if colleges will factor that into my High school GPA? or Consider it as an extra course ?
Doesn’t your high school’s math course that comes after algebra 2 include trigonometry and precalculus, so that you will be ready for calculus immediately thereafter? If so, take that in 12th grade.
In school after algebra 2 comes Trig. I have to take Trig in Gr 12. Its a year long course and that will leave me no time to do Pre-Cal. Hence the debate as to whether i should finish Trig online.
I am not doing the Algebra/Trig combined course in Grade 11. So I am afraid Pre-Cal will be left out of my math study
So your high school takes two years to cover what most high schools cover in one (precalculus with trigonometry)?
What is the usual math sequence in your high school?
Algebra1 /Integ Math in Grade 9, Geometry in Grade 10, Algebra 2/Trigi n Gr 11, Pre-Calc in Grade 12. Of course this sequence can be modified based on math proficiency. Hence am taking Algebra 2 in Grade 11. That leaves me only Gr 12 to study Trig the whole year and no chance to to study Pre-Cal. Also, since we cannot advance any class in school by taking external classes, this works to my disadvantage. Hence I am seriously thinking of finishing Trig from an Online course. Then do Pre-Cal whole of Grade 12 again thru Online.
