Hey, freshman here. Was wondering whether or not i should self study a certain AP or 2 in my first year of HS. What i'm really curious about is AP lit and comp, possibly along with AP Bio. I'm pretty adverse in both these subjects and enjoy Biology as a hobby of sorts. All i'm worried about though is work-load and i would like advice from some people who've taken these tests to see if i can do it with my schedule.

Here's schedule
Honors ELA
Accelerated Coordinate Algebra/Analytic Geometry A(confusing but it means 10th grade math)
AP Human Geography
Spanish II
Health/Personal Fitness
Percussion Techniques(Band)
Honnors Biology

Any help would be appreciated.

Also maybe AP Psych

I personally wouldn’t advise self studying as a freshman for multiple reasons (1)YOU’RE A FRESHMAN, ENJOY HIGH SCHOOL 2)You’re still maturing intellectually and you wouldn’t want to burn out with the unnecessary stress of an added workload) If anything, you should only self study 1-2 courses as a freshman (1 hard, 1 ‘easy’)

In all, it depends on the amount of work you’re given in your non-self studying classes. I see that the only class that MIGHT interfere with this is AP Human Geo (again Im just making an observation, the workload differs school to school)

My two cents on the classes that you want to self study
- I personally WOULDN’T study AP Lit, you tend to improve your writing/ reading analysis skills more with the aid of an experienced teacher not to mention that the essay grading is HIGHLY subjective.

2)Apparently from what I’ve heard, AP Comp is a pretty easy class to self study. Many people have only read *** Ethel Woods AP Comparative Government and Politics: A Study Guide 4th Edition.*** and managed to get a 5 on the exam. Get that, print out the collegeboard course description, get a textbook if you feel like it, and you should be good.

3)AP Biology isn’t a hard class (its moderately difficult) to self study but it requires ALOT of time, discipline, and self managment. If your planning on doing it this year, DON’T. Give yourself a couple of months to read through the book for the concepts of a college general biology course differ widely from say, an hoors biology course not to mention that they’ve changed the exam this year. I’d highly advise using the ap collegeboard course description for a general run through of concepts, a lab manual, Campbells biology book and corresponding study guide (or the cliff note’s prep book, that seems to be the highest rated prepbook). I was self studying AP Bio this year and felt pretty comfortable with the book alone though I’d also advise searching for MIT’S highlights for high school lectures to reinforce concepts

4) Apparently, AP Psych’s pretty easy with the Barron’s prep book alone, its all
memorizing terms/concepts from what I’ve heard. again, print out course description

Good luck!

“I’m pretty adverse in both these subjects”

Adverse, huh? I don’t really think you should self-study AP English. :)

^exactly what I thought, lol!
