On the fence about attending IU?

I was accepted to IU's journalism program back in October. I wasn't too excited, just because IU is my safety and I knew I was going to get in.

My first choice is a Top 20 in the World university in the United Kingdom and I really, really want to go, but there are complications with my student visa/passport + it's much more difficult to get student loans for schools across the pond.

I looked into IU and I've only heard good things about it, but I'm still really on the fence about attending if my first choice doesn't work out. I think it's mostly because IU is known as a real party school and I'm not quite sure how that'll affect me when I try getting a job. Plus, I live in New York City and I don't know how well I'd adjust to Bloomington. Overall there's really nothing keeping me from wanting to attend other than its reputation. Don't get me wrong, I like partying, but I'd like to challenged intellectually as well. Not to mention the great price tag IU comes with for out-of-state students and even with the scholarship, it will be a lot of money.

Any thoughts on what I should do?

IU’s party reputation will not prevent you from getting a job. What would prevent you from getting a job, is if all you did was party and your grades suffered. That said, students can choose to party as much, or as little, as they want and still find friends. DD was not a huge party girl, but she had plenty of friends and attended plenty of parties.

There are many students from the NYC/NJ area that attend IU. Have you visited Bloomington? In the past, IU holds an event in the NYC area for admits. Assuming the event is held again, try to attend. It may help you make a decision.

I have not visited yet, just because I’m visiting the U.K. in January and I don’t think I’ll visit Bloomington unless things don’t work out with my first choice. I do have a couple of friends who attend IU from my high school and they absolutely love it there.

Thank you for the reply! :)
