on the fence about quitting track/cross country

Hey everybody,
This is my first time posting on these forums so sorry if I’m not doing this right…
I’m applying to colleges this year and I want to major in art if possible. However, if I can’t get into a good art program I don’t want to be completely screwed so I still want my application to be competitive.
I’ve been a pretty good AP/honors student and I’ve been in track/XC for 3 years now. My issue is that track is such a big time sink that I barely have time for my homework— let alone my portfolio. I’m thinking about switching out because at this rate, my portfolio will not be competitive for art school. I haven’t been able to find any good information on this issue and I just want to know what my options are, chiefly if colleges will think poorly of me if I switch out of track to make time for work and art.
I’d appreciate any advice/info on this, thanks in advance!

Also if I like, posted this in the wrong place I’m sorry I’m really new here

Hello, if you are not going to run in college, the schools consider sports the same as any EC. Nothing wrong with taking part in an EC for 3 years. Do what is best for you

Hey, thanks for the reply! Yeah I’m not planning on running in college, and that’s good to hear that that’s how colleges think about it. I think what I’m most worried about is that I’ve heard colleges will see a lack of commitment or something like that.

When one of mine wanted to quit part of her long-time music, I told her, “Anyone who’s going to be impressed by your (EC) will be just as impressed by the three years.”

There are some activities a kid should stick with. In this case, make the decision that works best for you. It’ll be fine.

@lookingforward thanks for the advice! It’s helpful knowing that switching out is a viable option…

Academics come first if you’re not a recruited athlete. If you ask an adcom at a college fair or campus visit they’ll tell you something like this
