Hi, I am a undergraduate senior major in Biomedical Engineering. I am deciding between a Ph.D and a Master. I have done a lot of research and in the process of publishing my first paper (as first author). Personally, I love research but have not found an area where I want to focus on (be the expert on the topic). I really don't want to "waste" 5 to 6 years of my life studying a topic that I am not so sure about.

At one hand I really want to get a master at my current school (I can get my BS and MS in 5 years) because I will be able to publish 1 or 2 more paper before I leave, and I know in my field, an advanced degree brings me to the next level when it comes to job hunting At the other hand, my school is not funding for 5th year.

I have talked to some of the grad students I work with, they suggest me to get a Ph.D. The reason they given me was, PhD is a degree of that shows you can work independently. Even I can't get a job in the area of my focus, I can still get a job. However, I am not very satisfied with the answer. I have seen people can not find jobs because they are over qualified for the position.

On deciding between a master or Ph.D, what is your input?
Thank you
Jason
