On the right track for Honors Engineering?

Hi, i'm a high school sophomore, not exactly sure of my future college choices, but know I will be applying to Rutgers school of Engineering due to it's location, price, and several other factors. I mostly have the rest of my high school classes/ activities planned out, and just want to make sure everything I'm doing is enough to get into the Honors Engineering.

White male from NJ

PSAT- 192 sophomore year with no practice.
I should have no problem getting the required 750 math score, 1450 combined for entry into the Honors program, as I've taken several practice tests and they're promising and I will study hard this summer. Hopefully around 2200 for M+CR+W

Freshman:
Honors Geometry
Honors Algebra II
Honors Physics
Honors English I
Honors US Hist I
Spanish II
Culinary Arts (half year, required)
Digital Design (half year, required)
Gym (required)
All A+'s except I think an A in English

Sophomore:
AP Stats
Honors Precalc
Honors Chem
Honors US Hist II
Honors English II
Spanish III
Personal Finance (half year, required)
Nutrition (half year, required)
Gym (required)
All A's and A+'s

Junior:
AP Calc BC
AP Chem
Honors Bio
Honors World Hist
Honors English (possibly AP lang, but I want to spend more of my time and effort on math/science classes, especially since I'll major in engineering. But any suggestions)
Honors Spanish IV
Honors Intro to Comp Sci II (half year, required, but i skipped the non-honors course)
Web Design (half year, required)
Gym (required)
Plan on recieving all A's and A+'s once again. However, if i would take AP lang, that woulld likely be a B, as only once person last year got higher than a B. Plus, it would take some time away from my other classes, but this is jus my reasoning

Senior:
Multivariable Calculus (weighted like an AP)
AP Comp Sci
AP Physics
AP Spanish
Honors English IV
Gym
(Possibly AP bio, but I'll make that decision next year)

Most important Extra Curriculars:
Cross Country (all 4 years) likely captain next year/ senior
Winter Track (4 years) likely captain next year/ senior
Spring Track (4 years) likely captain next year/ senior
Student Council Treasurer (grade 10, hopefully next 2 years as well)
Environmental Club (4 years, hopefully some position of leadership in the next 2 years)

So if you think I am on the right track for the Honors engineering program, please let me know. Offer any comments/suggestions you have regarding my schedule or anything else. Thanks

If you can handle all these courses (meaning, if you can get A’s), I’d say you’re on the right track. Keep in mind that all those AP’s and Honors don’t look very impressive if you’re not going to get A’s in them. A B+ in AP/Honor may have the same numerical GPA value as an A in regular, but A in regular looks a lot better.

Guidance counselors and teachers will most likely tell you otherwise…saying that even if you get a B+ in AP, it will look better because it exemplifies your motivation to challenge yourself and what not. But what guidance counselors (at least those from public schools) tell you is a pile of rotten crap; I wish I knew that when I was in high school.

So yes, if you think you can’t get A’s in certain courses, don’t take them.

Yes, exactly, that was the problem I explained with my honors english/AP English situation. I already have a perfect 4.0 unweighted GPA and definitely think I can keep that up next year, by taking advanced AP math and science classes and honors English and history. However I am pretty sure that if I decided to go with AP English, I likely wouldn’t get an A, while also having less time to work on the classes more important to me like chem and calc (especially since I am heavily involved in a sport year round). So basically, I was wondering if the AP Lang was worth it, or if my original plan would be the best if I want to go for the honors engineering program. And btw thanks

xctrack my son took regular English senior year because he just didn’t want to put the time in for honors; he wanted to enjoy senior year and he did. It might make more of a difference at a more selective school.

Rutgers wants a 750+ math and 650+ CR score.

For engineering honors, they want you to have at least a 1450 combined on your math and critical reading portions on the SAT and top 5% of your class.

http://soe.rutgers.edu/oaa/honors

Yea thanks rualum. The top 5% won’t be hard, as I’m tied for the top of my class, and assuming I can get all As the rest of highschool (which I think I can, especially with honors English) then I will stay at the top. And I am planning on putting a good amount of time into studying for the sat this summer, so those sat scores are definitely within reason for me. But here’s a question I have that the Rutgers website didnt clear up to well: if you meet those standards (top 5% and 1450 sat) are you automatically into the honors program once you get into the school of engineering, or does that just make you considered for honors? And if it just makes you considered, what else do they look at to make their decisions (courses taken, extracurriculars, holistic application, etc)?

It says “…will be eligible for consideration as participants” so that means it is not automatic.
