On the right track? I hope...

Hey guys, would've asked sooner but time flies when you're busy! Anyway... I'm a jr. this fall and just wanted to ask those who seem to be the experts one where I should be at in terms of applying for USNA 2012. I've got contact info for BGO (the state coordinaters actually), got a candidate nomintion packet from my rep. (just to get an idea of what's in it, it's dated specifically for c/o 2011 people) & talked to the lady who's in charge of the rep.s service academy nominations (very informative. Had no clue USNA was most popular/competitive along with AFA in the Ohio 15th!) So, where do I go from here? I know I need to drop a line to one of the state coordinators (Which one? One w/ address closest to me, or anyone that I want? I think one's realted to my math teacher & this kid I don't like...)to find out about a BGO. But after I know of my BGO, do I drop them a line too, just intorducing myself? And of course there's NASS but that's Jan/Feb. Any thoughts would be helpful as this is new territory for me & school guidance dept. didn't know very much about academy addmissions, etc. Thanks!!

First thing you're doing right is asking questions when your Junior year is coming up. Sounds like you've got a lot of things figured out. If you haven't already, get William Smallwoods book; The Naval Academy Candidates Guide, How to Prepare, How to get in, How to Survive. Then you'll really know what questions to ask. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0929311051/sr=1-1/qid=1153939179/ref=pd_bbs_1/103-4529327-7395010?ie=UTF8&s=books

By the way, take everything I say with a grain of salt because my daughter is still working towards the class of 2011. She did say that NASS (and AFASS) was definitely worth it and motivated her even more.

Good Luck.

Hey Cougar ... Just curious, mine went to NASS. How did yours compare, contrast the AFASS to NASS? or is that H-AFASS?

Sorry. I could contain myself. ;-) Seriously tho ... whad she say of the 2 expereinces?

1/2? Funny, I get it. Took me a while though.

She was pretty set on the Navy when she first went, and she didn't change her mind. She didn't really say anything bad about the Air Force Academy, she just like Annapolis better. She especially liked the mini-Sea Trials and how rough and tumble USNA seems compared to USAFA. Colorado Springs is still a very good possibility as a backup plan though.

My wife and I would actually like to see her go to AF, since most of my wifes family lives within site of the Academy and we can drive there from here, even though it's about a 13 hour trip. I'm happy she has a mind of her own though, and I do lean towards the Navy myself.

Interesting insights. Mine began this process thinking that was for him. He metamorphed over 3 or 4 years, hearing two notable and seeminly credible observations. One from a 30 year AF guy (an old friend we ran into at NASS coincidentally, as his son is looking at AF, USNA, WP), and the other from a 30 year Navy man who now lives on an AF base and daily works with the fly by gang.

The first said, in observing his first son, who is at the AF Acad after attending their prep school and rejecting an outright appt. to WP, he thought his older son was much better suited to WP as he's a get down and dirty, git 'er done type of kid. And at AF, you'd better like to play golf. An unintended but humorous observation.

And the 30 year Navy guy waxed, "They're always goin' around hugging and kissing each other. It's enuff to make you sick."

Again I fell on the floor.

But interestingly, my son heard them both. And so it is.
