Once and done?

My DD has taken the SAT once and done OK for most schools, 730 CR 740 M and 650 W. She has also taken the SAT II Am Lit- 730, Math II- 720 and USHist-800. Her weekends this fall will be busy with a new job Sat and Sunday mornings. Will she be at much of a disadvantage if she doesn't take the SAT again? She may have to take one more SATII (A science) Depending where she ends up applying. She is also 4.0 uw and #1 or tie with a couple others in a class of 323. Schools she is considering: in no order U Wa, Rice, Northwestern, WUSTL, MIT, Lafayette, Penn, and Yale.

I would retake for MIT and Yale.

Also, about half of the applicants to MIT have an 800 on the math II, so a 720 will put you at a severe disadvantage. I would strongly recommend retaking for MIT. Also, 2120 is good enough for most schools your applying to except MIT and Yale.

^ Penn’s a pretty selective school also.

WUSTL should accept the 2120, but a 2200+ will help her greatly.

If she can do better, say 2200+, then she is definitely selling herself short by not resitting.

It doesn’t hurt to take it again.
Good luck to her!

Really, she’s fine. For god’s sake people.

Personally, I’d retake it (I will also be rather busy with a job, sports, hw, etc.). While the difference between a 2200 and 2300 is negligible, it would help significantly if she could pull it from a 2120 to 2200+. Just check out the common data sets of schools she’s interested in, and see if her scores are at or above that 50% mark

I’d say shoot for 2200+. I don’t think it’s a huge difference, but if it’s only the second time testing, a little bit of studying and one more test isn’t going to kill anyone and could very well do a lot of good. At least then there would be no regrets.

Thanks for the responses. Seems like the consensus is to retake. I guess the reason I don’t think it is so important is the fact that her lowest score is in the writing and she’s actually quite a good writer ( I teach English) and I think that her application essays will probably show that, so while 2120 is good but not great, the 730 CR and 740 M are strong enough. I know some of the schools don’t put as much credence in the SAT writing (Northwestern and MIT for example). I guess we’ll see how the job is going once school starts next month and decide. Thanks again

She should retake it without studying if she doesn’t have the time. It’s only $40 and a few hours spent…

She is fine. No one ever gets into MIT anyway - I hear it is really just a ghost town.
