Once you're in Wharton, how intensive is the math?

Like many people going into Wharton, I've taken AP Stat and AP Calc BC. With 5's on both of them, I don't have to take Stat 101 or Math 104, and I don't want to take any more math/stat courses than necessary (due to the precious space available in my schedule).

But I'm getting nervous about the math that I'll encounter. I'm expecting math to come up in finance, accounting, maybe econ, etc, and I don't want to hurt myself by dropping calc. Plus, I'm nervous about Stat 102, after not studying any stat since junior year.

1) Is it a bad idea to not take Math 114 (will it harm my performance in math-based business classes)?
2) Is stat 102 a very difficult course, and is it necessary to still remember a lot of the concepts from stat 101?

Thanks

I got credit for 104 and 114.

I am never taking another math class again, and I didn’t learn basically anything in the 114-equivalent that I got transfer credit for so it’s safe to say you’re fine without 114. BPUB is intermediate microecon, which is “heavily” math based, but it’s just algebra and a bit of calculus.

I took 101 and 102, but a lot of my friends took 102 with credit for 101. You’ll be completely fine. 102 was pretty easy too- just all hypothesis tests and whatnot. Don’t particularly need the majority of what is taught in 101 besides hypothesis testing.

Don’t stress yourself out with 114 unless you’re genuinely interested in that stuff. That class is what made me realize that I actually hate math and that my Asian side is disappointed with my math failures, haha.

I don’t know about FNCE and ACCT. I’m assuming it’d be fine with just 104 knowledge. And honestly I remember none of 104 since I took that back in my junior year of high school and I’m super bad at retaining information.

Did you recieve credit from a community college multivariable class? I’m trying to do the same thing, except take math 240. I think I have to take a placement test but wasn’t sure how the credit for 114 worked.

Yeah it was a community college multivariable class. I’m surprised they took it… Apparently the math department here is really bad with giving transfer credit. My friend took a class that was considered 104/114/240 mixed, and couldn’t get credit for it so he took 114 to try and fulfill the math credit (he’s in Wharton too).

There’s a system called XCAT. [XCAT - External Credit Evaluation Tool | Computing](http://www.sas.upenn.edu/computing/xcat)
You can log on there and submit the form. Check to make sure the syllabi line up with each other. It takes some time- my friend hasn’t gotten credit yet and it’s been 3 months. I was lucky I guess and mine went through in a week or 2.

Thank you, I had no idea about any of that. Did you still take the placement test? And how was starting in math 240… I’m a little worried about it being my first semester and all. I kind of took over this thread sorry

I didn’t know that you needed a placement test to get into 240- I didn’t take the class. I had two friends that took it- I can ask him how it was/if he needed to take a placement test. He fared fine in it though, I don’t think I heard him complain about it much.

Thanks for your help, if I at least had an idea of the workload that would be nice. Also if you ask, could you ask how much background you need in diffy q’s? My course really didn’t cover that but I’ve heard 114 only covers super basic ones you sometimes learn in BC anyways.

Read the course descriptions here and take a look at their exams:

Thanks for all of the info. Penn Course Review seems to make Stat 102 look rather difficult, which scared me. I’m nervous that most other people will have taken Stat 101, so because I haven’t studied stat since junior year, the curve will work against me. Maybe I’m just overthinking it

Stat 102 was a lotttt easier than Stat 101. That was the general consensus this year. Don’t worry! They do a decent job of starting from the beginning.
