So last Quarter I got a 2.7 GPA, I know, I know. I got a C in Geometry(:S) and AP Euro. I'm expecting to get at least a 3.8 this marking period. How much will this affect my college admissions? Could I explain on my app that I was like sick a lot or something? :S I'm a soph.

My D had a horrid SEMESTER grade as a sophomore…and it effectively RUINED her GPA. She has been unable to bring it back to the rank/GPA she had before it happened (long story, changed schools, etc.).

Her standardized test scores are great, but it’s my feeling that this one semester will keep her out of elite colleges. Yes, she has some reasons, but…unless one wants to write their essay answering that situation, and risk sounding like a whiner, I just HOPE the “readers” happen to notice that she changed schools.

In your case:
1.) REALLY work hard to get the best possible scores from now on because it seems SO much harder to scrape back up than to tumble down.
2.) Lots of your essays will allow you to address things like being sick. Even some short answer questions. And/or you can ask your guidance counselor to possibly address it if she is knowledgeable about your situation, in the recommendations she sends.
3.0 Besides…if it’s just a “quarter”…do those grades even show on your transcript? I mean, yes…that will also bring your semester GPA down, but…the 2.7 won’t even show up, will it? Ask your counselor about quarter grades. They probably don’t send them.

That’s what I’m hoping, If I get 3.8’s the next 3 quarters then my GPA will be around a 3.525 which isn’t that bad I guess. I got a 3.8 GPA last year so it’ll average to around a 3.67 :S
