One Bad Semester + Admissions

IMAGINE THIS SITUATION:

an applicant has a plethora of Cs, and a couple of Ds and Fs during one of his semesters during Sophomore year…

but his overall stats turn out to be:

Unweighted GPA = 3.35
Weighted GPA = 4.25

SAT = High 1300s

Good SATs

National AP Scholar

Very accelerated in math… (taking high level math in college junior+senior year)

Good ECs…
Several Small Awards…

Does this applicant have a chance at UNC???

Applicant is instate and all of his bad marks are 1 SEMESTER… the rest of the semesters are really good…

And the only excuse he has for the bad marks is:
-English as foreign language
-Lots of Stress when first entering AP program
-Trouble concentrating in class…

Do you think the applicant has a good shot for acceptance or probable rejection?

Also the applicants Class Rank is 20% when most of UNC’s students are in top 10%…
Will being in the most competitive school in the State help…
4.25 Weighted GPA is only Top 20% at the school

you have a very similar status as me.

you should probably cite the reasons why did so bad that semester in your essays and explain how you learned from the experience and how you turned it all around

Colleges love improvement! If you did very nicely junior or senior year, it would not be bad. But just out of curiosity are you a junior or senior? If you have not applied to colleges yet, I recommend that you do RD instead of ED just because you want them to see your 1st sem senior grades, before they make their decision, to show that you are improving. But if you feel that ED is important, then I guess 1 semester of bad grades is not too big of a deal as long as there are legitimate reasons, and it seems like you have some.

i can do EA.. and if i get deferred, ill mail in my Senior grades.. and updated Standarized Exam Scores. and new activities/awards..

well, you have a good chance either way.
