One C in Chem with a SAT II 800 score

Hi CCers,

During my sophmore year I took all honors classes. I received all A’s in my classes except for one C in chem.
I had a job 12 hours per week from the middle to the end of that year so I’m not really sure if I should mention that on my app, as it won’t really explain my one C but all A’s in the rest of my classes.

I also wanted to know if my 800 score on my SAT II chemistry test will minimize the blow of my C in Chem Honors, as my chem teacher was notoriously difficult.

Thanks!

Any responses would be very much appreciated! My main overall q is if the 800 on the SAT II will balance out my C in chem honors… and I am not planning on taking AP chem

If this were a pattern in your transcript (low grades, high test scores) that might be a red flag. The adcom might think, “only works for teachers he/she likes” or “smart but underachieving”. One blip, not so big of a deal, except at schools where there are tens of thousands of seemingly perfect kids applying.

A note that the teacher is one of the toughest in the school would be OK to put on your app. There is usually a space for “do you have anything else you want us to know?” You could have your counselor put it in his/her letter as well.

Thank you so much! This isn’t a pattern in my transcript, as I’ve received A’s in nearly all of my classes. I’m hoping that this outlier will not have a major blow on my application as a whole…

Ahaha I got a C+ in my Chem Honors class for a semester grade so I know how you feel. I got a 35 on the ACT Science section and have As in the rest of my science courses so I did that to show the adcom that I have the quantitative skills, and that C+ is an anomaly. You’ll do just fine!

They’re probably going to think your teacher/school is insane, since you had A’s in other classes (I’m assuming you took other AP classes). It still won’t look good, though.

I was in a similar situation with a D in pre-calc and an 800 in math…the struggles
