I have a question about the UNC ONE Card. At CTOPS, do you actually transfer money to your ONE Card, or do you just set it up? I have already opened a checking account with Wachovia. Thanks so much to anyone who can explain what happens with the ONE Card at CTOPS! LOL: )

You can do either. You can also add/transfer money at any time. If you already have an account at Wachovia they can link them or you can keep your One Card and debit card separately which many also choose to do. I hope that answered your question.

Thanks, eadad! What are the advantages and disadvantages to linking or not linking my One Card and my debit card? I'm also trying to decide which card I should use to buy all my books if I don't link... ugh. This stuff is boggling my mind, lol; )

Also, I'm going to the August CTOPS. After I finally get my card, how do I add money after? And how do I do that? Everyone else gets theirs earlier, so they can send in that convinent little envelope with a check to put that money on their card. Since I get mine when I'm already in NC...should I just fill out that slip and envelope before, and turn it in down there? Sorry if this seems like a dumb question...

PS. I don't have a Wachovia account, nor do I want one.

This page should provide the information you need:

http://www.onecard.unc.edu/payments.html

I would not recommend putting a lot of money in the expense account. You can always add more if you have the need.

If you have a Wachovia bank account, I recommend linking it with your UNC One Card. Here is how ldgirl banks....

She has a Wachovia savings account and checking account. The checking account is linked to her UNC One Card. She also has a Wachovia debit card that accesses those accounts. She goes online and makes periodic transfers from her savings to checking account which she can access at any debit card machine with her UNC One Card or her Wachovia debit card.

She loads just enough on her expense account to do laundry and the other things that require expense account balance (like vending machines, copy center, etc...). To load money on expense, she either charged her credit card, or made a deposit in person in the UNC One Card office.

Last year, she did the August oos student CTOPS and it took a day or two for her UNC One Card to link to her Wachovia accounts, so she used her Wachovia debit card until then. The UNC One Card was active for her meal plan almost immediately.

If you DON'T have a Wachovia account, all you do is load your expense with either a credit card or by making a deposit at the One Card office I believe. On the first day of August CTOPS, you will have your picture made and your card will be available that day. You should be able to make a deposit into expense that day as well. (Prepare yourself...if you don't have a Wachovia account, you have to stand in a very long line. Those with Wachovia accounts are already in the system and get to go through the very fast short line.)

if i link my one card to my wachovia account, does that mean that every time i make a campus-related purchase, the money is deducted from my expense account, and every time i make a non-campus-related purchase, it deducts from my checking account? is that how it works? sorry this is a really noob question haha

hmmm....good question misstiinax...lol! I know the laundry, vending, printing, etc that take ONLY expense come out of expense. But I think some places take UNC One expense and bank debit cards (and credit cards)...like student stores. When ldgirl gets home, I'll ask her how that works. In the meantime, maybe another student will know the answer.

One other advantage to having linked Wachovia accounts (called UNC One Plus) is when you want to load your expense account, you use the Wachovia fund transfer service to transfer funds for free. This is done via telephone.

What things do you need the One Card for that you couldn't use the regular debit card for?

The UNC One Card is also your Student ID....it's required. And certain purchases require the One Card expense account for payment.... like laundry machines, vending machines, copy center, etc...

But linking the One Card to a Wachovia bank account (UNC One Card Plus) is purely optional. You could just get the UNC One Card, load the expense account for the required stuff and use your regular Debit Card for everything else.

misst - according to ldgirl, if you have UNC One Plus Card with money loaded into expense...and you make a purchase at a place (ex: student stores) that will accept payment from either the debit card feature OR the expense account feature of your card; you will be asked 'debit or expense?' when you swipe your card.

Some places only take expense (vending, laundry, etc...), some places only take debit (Walmart, Target, etc....) and some places take both (student stores, certain local restaurants, etc...). It's confusing, but you will quickly learn who takes what and it will become very routine.

thanks so much Idmom! that helped tons!

Thanks, ldmom! : )

You are most welcome! :)

Thanks also. That's clearer now. When son went to TSOP he got the ID (I didn't realize that was called the OneCard). He didn't link it to any account--but I guess he could later? Or do you just get one shot per year to decide if you want the plus or the regular? If he is living off campus, would he be using the OneCard much to pay for things? If you buy food on campus, can one just use a regular debit card?

what do you use at the dining halls?

at the dining halls you would swipe your one card to use a meal from your meal plan or in the bottom of lenior you can use expense or another form of payment. Customers who use one card payment from their expense account are, however, exempt from sales tax on items.

Do you get a tax exemption for payments from expense? I know you do for dining flex expenditures.

Nevermind...found the answer. You get a 7% tax exemption for dining purchases from expense and a 5% discount plus 7% tax exemption for dining purchases made from dining flex.

I know its a real duh question, but I really don't know it :o
What is expense account? And what is the difference between expense account, checking account and savings account?
