I am a junior with a 3.96 UW high school GPA, with honors and AP classes. During my freshman year, I was selected for a special program where I took two classes at my local university, getting an A+ in one and a D+ in the second one. There is no real reason for the terrible grade - just stress, family issues, and not knowing the importance of it. Those classes aren't on my high school transcript and aren't factored into that GPA, which was calculated by my school.

My question is: will I have to send notify colleges about those classes and grades? Would the D+ destroy any chance at a top-tier school? What about pretty good schools, and my chances of merit aid at any level of school?

Yes, you will have to notify colleges about those courses. No, your getting a D in a college course when you were a freshmen, probably will not hurt your chances of admission and merit aid. Many colleges don’t count freshmen grades. Colleges also would make allowances for a h.s. freshman taking a college course.

Some state schools admit by stats (GPA and SAT/ACT), so you’ll be fine at many of them.

Some also will award merit that way, too. What are your test scores?

Tell colleges about your situation through an interview or essay. It may help your case.

Who do you think you are MAYNE. This kid’s one’s minor flaw won’t screw up his entire life.

I read in What High Schools Don’t Tell You, by Elizabeth Wissner-Gross, that you can choose not to list a college course taken during high school if the course was not used to satisfy a graduation requirement and the grade was not factored into your high-school GPA. Better check with somone knowledgeable about this. Perhaps ask the adcoms of the schools you are considering, without going into specifics about the grades of course.

Don’t write an essay about it. Have your GC let college know that you were only a freshman who was among only 2 in your school selected to take that college course.
