One D in the first semester of senior year... chances of being rescinded?

Hello all! I have been accepted to Cal State Long Beach with a 3.52 GPA and a 1940 combined SAT score. My declared major is Business Information Systems, which is not an impacted major at CSULB.

However, during the first semester of my senior year I received a D in my Pre-Calculus class, and I’m worried that my admissions will be rescinded. I already accepted the admission offer and paid my deposit fee, as well as my housing and orientation fee. My overall GPA for the first semester of senior year, 3.40, is only slightly lower than the GPA which I got accepted for. I’m on track to get a C this semester, which will validate the D in first semester, so I will pass the class and receive full credits. But, still I’m still worried that my admission offer is in jeopardy, as the D still be considered for the final admissions review. I emailed the admissions office, and they said that vaguely said that anything is possible. Any advice? Should I call the admissions office or write them a letter?

@CSUBro

There is virtually zero chance of your offer being withdrawn. You shouldn’t have even brought it to their attention. If they tried to do it (and they won’t) you could sue them and win because I promise you there are people every year that get a D or even an F and still go on, as long as they graduate high school. And being a state school, they have to treat people equally. They would have to come up with something pretty creative to single you out. So sleep peacefully, you have nothing to worry about.

According to http://web.csulb.edu/depts/enrollment/admissions/freshman_toa.html the requirements are

You should really work with your GC on this. I’m not an admission officer, but my understanding is that “validation” means that when you pass a 2nd semester of a math class you get credit for the entire year of math applied towards the A-G requirements. However there is still the matter of the grade below a C. Not sure what they will do, see if your GC can help find out if it affects you and, if so, if there is an option to retake that 1st semester class in summer school to get a passing grade that replaces the D.

Obvious you are in a vulnerable position that you really want to get some solid answer from the college before it is too late to make backup plan. As the pre-calc is a year course. A higher grade in the second semester may rescue the D from first semester. Talk to the teacher to see if there is anyway that may help your final grade.

You still need to contact admissions about the D. Mostly likely they will let it sllide if you get a C or better 2nd semester but they should be given a heads up since you will be sending in your transcript after graduation. You do not want any surprises.

You can check with your guidance counselor but typically schools only see the year end grade. Do everything possible to get it up to the C range including seeing the teacher after school, get a tutor, ask a friend for help etc.

^ That is nothing really typical when it comes to HS transcripts. They do put semester grades on my D’s HS transcript for all year long courses.

Thank you all! I’ll definitely make sure that I’ll get a C or higher in Pre-Calculus this semester. Also, I’ll call the admissions office tomorrow to notify them about the first semester grade. Hope all goes well.

Update to anyone who is wondering! I was not rescinded after all, as my GPA did not drop significantly (only a 0.4 drop). So really they just emphasize maintaining your GPA as the core goal. Cheers! I surely learned my lesson though.
